“Why do you dislike me so much, Professor?” Hermione asked as she finally cornered her former teacher successfully.
”I do not believe that your assine question merits a response, much less my attention. Now if you will excuse me,” Snape curtly replied as he lifted a dark eyebrow at her.
”No, I won’t excuse you. I’m sick of you being such a unbearable, wretched man.”
“Just as I am equally sick of you being a pedantic, childish brat who insists on knowing everything and saving everyone who crosses her path.”
”I do not!”
”Shut your mouth, Miss Granger, it is highly unbecoming for you to stand there gaping at me. You really want to know why I dislike you?”
”Yes,” Hermione curtly replied before firmly shutting her mouth.
“Quite simply, I can not stand the way in which you arrogantly break the rules and assist Potter and Weasley in breaking the rules. You possess talent and intelligence, yet you continually insist on wasting your time with the two laziest and ignorant buffoons to have graced Hogwarts in some time. Time and time again, you have aided the great Potter and Weasley in their rule breaking and rather than letting them suffer the consequence of their ill habits, you continue to bail them out ensuring that they pass their classes. Essentially Miss Granger, you have wasted your abilities to gain a small measure of popularity from being in Potter’s limelight.”
Snape watched her with some dark amusement as she paled at his assessment of her. He doubted that the little chit had imagined his response; no doubt she had expected some flowery prose in which he confessed his desire for her to save him. Before she could respond, he roughly pushed her aside.
”Now that I have wasted my time with your juvenile posturing, I will be on my way. Good day, Miss Granger,” Snape sardonically drawled before turning on his heal.
Hermione silently watched the celebrating crown in Hogwarts’ Great Hall swallow the dark haired man from her view. She didn’t know what had possessed her to force his admission as to why he disliked her. Part of her knew that it was his refusal to apprentice her that had led her to behave irrationally. She didn’t doubt that she couldn’t force him to take her on as an apprentice, not with her connections in the Ministry and within Hogwarts, but she knew now that in good conscience she couldn’t do that to him. As she started to move within the crowd, she sighed in frustration as she realized that some things were better left unsaid.
