As he slowly heals from the wounds that he had gained from protecting her, Rogue is filled with an uncontrollable anger. Jean and the Professor tell her that it’s not really her anger that it’s his anger filling her from when they touched, but she knows that it’s not his. They can’t understand why she would be so angry at being used as a weapon because of her skin. Nor can they understand her anger over how Logan almost got killed because he kept his promise to her. They’d much rather blame her fury on something that they can understand.

In his dreams, he takes her hand and they both run away from the world that Professor Xavier has carved out for them. A world where they’re forced to choose a side because that’s what good people do. A world where he can’t be with her because it’s considered wrong, so he lies about who his heart belongs to, because it’s better to chase after someone who is in a relationship than a young slip of a girl with haunted eyes. In his dreams, they can be with one another without fear of reprisal from the others or her power.

Over the months, Rogue has come to hate the colour red more than any other colour. For her it represents that she can’t have the one thing that she most wants, while Jean so easily possesses it. Red is the colour of all her shattered hopes and dreams. Red is the colour of the jealousy that she feels for the older woman, who really can’t be blamed. It reminds her of the love that she does not possess and how she will never possess. And it reminds her of how he loves Jean even though Jean doesn’t reciprocate that love.
