What makes someone a good leader? Is it caring about the people they're in charge of? Or is it more making sure they can all get out of an impossible situation alive? During those times do numbers count, or is any single loss an unacceptable failure ( Read more... )

He was somewhat Godly. But I'm biased.

[Seems he at least picked up on his mistake.]

He was the best I ever heard of.

That's why our crew was so successfully large.

It's achieving the goal that they and whoever they're leading is aiming for. If they don't achieve it, they failed.

In a lifetime people set many goals for themselves or others. It's impossible for all of them to succeed without any setbacks ever, especially when sometimes the goals are mistaken. Sometimes a better accomplishment it simply learning from mistakes.

What then? Can those too always be considered an ultimate failure?

If they have multiple goals, they need to succeed at the majority of them, or at least the most important ones. Stop trying to be philosophical when the answer's perfectly obvious.

So then a successful majority is all that matters?

Still doesn't make a person a good leader or not. Someone could be successful at group goals, but terrible at personal ones or vice versa.

I think it's someone who makes you braver by their presence.

Hm. Yeah?

I guess that's a good way to think of it. Ever know of someone like that?

One person. I wish she were here right now. Well actually no I don't, because then she'have to be away from her family...but it'd help.

I think I know what you mean. It's nice to have people like that in your life.

Wouldn't caring result in the other instances you listed? Y'know, like a chain reaction.

Just because someone cares doesn't mean they'll always be strong enough to lead someone in a battle or to safety.

Even the most talented doctor is going to lose some patients sometimes, eh.

Got a point there.

Guess compassion and that strength can be considered two qualities of a good leader.

You know I'm not.

All the red tape and the loops one must go through, and all that useless banter. Who needs it! I say, if the person has the experience, proper responsibility, and isn't a complete nut job (but the best of leaders are, alas), then give them the title and respect they deserve.

Of course, the latter part is optional and depends on the person. Each definition of respect differs.

I'm beginning to think every great captain on the Grand Line is a complete nut job. [Marco included oh god.] Maybe good leaders all just snap under pressure unless they're already off the deep end.

Of course.
