[Only a little shaken up from the crash emergency landing, it had still taken Rinoa a little while to get ready. Fact is she'd had to junction first, Shiva seeming an ironic but appropriate choice considering just how cold it was already getting. The choice to junction ice magic to Elem-def-J had been an easy one at least. After that it didn't

Hey! Do you know a woman named Lightning?
Reply
Lightning? [She thinks about this, almost getting whipped by a Grat in the process. Startled, she takes the grat out with her blaster edge, since it's still the weapon she's most familiar with and the action comes more or less by instinct now.]
I think there was someone with a name like that, but I didn't know her really. I think she went home a while ago though?

She was here? And she went home?
[He lifts his hands in a 'you gotta be kidding gesture', with a smile that's really the only reaction he can bear to have right now]
That's nuts!
Time compression is weirder than I thought... Anyway, if you knew her at all, you'll know it's a compliment that you reminded me of her!

[She works her way over to the stranger though, understanding his frustration.]
She's a friend of yours? I'm sorry I don't have anything more certain to tell you. There might be someone else who knows better though.
You're telling me. We never would have guessed that time compression would have such far reaching effects like this!
[She smiles, though it's tinged with sadness.]
If I reminded you of a friend, then of course it's a compliment, right?

[He smirked, approaching her since there wasn't any immediate danger.]
I have to say, I'm proud you've come this far with a sword. Never thought I'd make a good teacher.

[She smiled at Ryu and then carefully lowered her gunblade for the moment.]
I thought you said you'd already taught someone else? Either way, it doesn't change the fact that you're a great teacher. You've been a big help.

[He blushes a little at the compliment.]
You're welcome.

Well, if he's alive you can't have done that bad, right? [Leave it to her to look on the bright side in all of that.]
I mean it, you've been a big help. So you've got nothing to worry about your teacher qualifications are in the clear.

[Seifer has his own out, maybe looking to come rescue Rinoa if given that chance because he really finds it difficult to perceive her using one effectively. Or maybe he's just surprised she's managed one.]
Do you need me to save your behind?
Reply
[She's certainly not on his level yet by any means, but taking care of a bunch of Grats and Bite Bugs isn't too big of a stretch. Though it does start to wear her out after a while. A Gunblade is quite a bit heavier than any Blaster Edge after all and requires quite a bit more physically too.]
I didn't realize how hard it was to use. You and Squall both make it look so easy! [She makes a rueful face at the blade in her hands the before moving in on another monster.]
Save me? [Let's face it, they both knew she didn't need saving at least not this time for once.] You can save my arms? I'm not sure I'll be able to move tomorrow at this rate.
Reply
Yes you did. I guess I should be impressed that you've managed so far without stabbing yourself or something.
If your arms fall off, I'll carry those back, but you can drag yourself.

[She pouts a little at this, but it's clear that it doesn't bother her that much otherwise she wouldn't be doing all of this to begin with. After all if she really wanted to, it wasn't likely that her father would out and out turn her away after all. So her determination to become a fully independent SeeD is actually pretty serious.]
Drag myself back? Why would I have to do that? My legs are just fine so can't I walk?

He notices Rinoa taking on a pack of Grats and Bite Bugs with her gunblade, and doing a good job for someone who was still a novice back when they had that class. Readying his own gunblade, he slashes a nearby bug to pitching in.]
I see you've been practicing.

Thanks. I've been training overtime ever since that class. Ryu's been helping me. It hasn't left me much spare time though. [Which is totally going to change, she's missed having an actual social life. All she's been doing is school, study, and training lately and that's so boring!]
Reply
There hasn't been a lot of spare time lately. Good thing we got winter break, huh?
[He raises his gunblade to block a swung tendril from a grat. Not the best place to start a conversation, really.]

I'm looking forward to having some time to just relax and catch up with everyone.
[It probably isn't, but really, what other choice did they have? It's not like it's a hard fight or anything. Rinoa also has the perk that a good part of her training has been on the grats and bugs of the training center so it really is more or less an ingrained habit by now.]

Unless you were always a natural, eh?
