1. Much to my chagrin, I am watching Fox in hopes that they'll show a Dollhouse promo. A friend found this one the other night, but the quality is so low that you can barely see Jamie ( Read more... )

how spell-check has "ruined" grammar. I was particularly intrigued by the list of the twenty most common errors in college student papers.

I do think they have a point. Another thing I've noticed in the last few years of teaching college freshmen is how they just don't know how to write. I'm not talking just about grammar and spelling but also simple penmenship. They spend so much time on the computer and are so dependent on it that when it comes time for them to hand-write an essay test the results end up being practically illegible.

Illegible AND incoherent FTW!

Sigh. (Too dispirited to launch into my customary rant about the declining skills of America's youth...)

I hear ya on the penmanship. Unfortunately, handwriting isn't part of the curriculum anymore, beyond simply learning HOW to write in elementary school. I'm assuming this is because handwriting can't be assessed via a standardized test. Sigh.

Just looking at that article gave me a headache. Grammar and spelling have never been my specialty. History I can rattle off like a computer, but spelling correctly no. I can't tell what verb, adverb, or noun is what to what, just goes over my head.

PS This might be something that you can add to your Awesome cat links, if you have any. I can't imagine how he got the cats do this at all.

The tricky thing about grammar is that so much of it is dependent on "what sounds right" even if you don't know the rules themselves. And when students come from a background where they don't usually hear proper English at home, they don't have that innate ability to know when it doesn't "sound right".

Thanks for the heads-up! It's an actual scene rather than a catch-all promo, but this one was quite intriguing. :)

Hey girl! (It was awesome hanging with you all weekend! YAY!) We just got home tonight so I'm doing quicky flist pop-ins and just wanted to ask about FNL. Is it airing on Direct TV on Wed nights? Hmmm. I was thinking I wouldn't be watching it till it aired on NBC next summer...

And the same to you! *mwah*

Pretty sure it'll be on DirecTV until that run is over, then shift over to NBC. I'll most likely download as usual. :)

Huzzah for 3a! Because my daughter is in morning kindergarten, she was on a bus home when it happened. I was busy with PTO stuff tonight, but tomorrow I am going to find it online so she and I can watch it together and discuss, as well as hopefully not get caught doing so by her rabidly libertarian (with a purposeful little l) father.

Hee! Good luck. ;) The kids did like the speech. If anything, some of them were rather bored by it. *g*
