Law & Order: Special Jamie Unit

I'll get the fandom stuff out of the way first. Many of you have probably already heard that Jamie will play one of the detectives in Law & Order: London. Hey, I actually like the L&O shows, so I'm pretty happy. And bamberrific just found video of his interview with Kristen. The first question is semi-spoilery for the finale, so just hit the ( Read more... )

Yay!!Someone else who watches 'The Middleman'!!Hope you like it.I really really enjoy it so far(although I'm a little behind in episodes...).

So,Bambie seems like he genuinely liked the BSG finale...That's a good thing,I think. But I felt sorry for him. They started the party while he was still filming!Poor guy...They should have waited for him.It must have been a tad harsh, hearing the partying while having to work himself.
(I can't help it,british accents make me over-sensitive lol!)

Caprica looks compelling_ the trailer at least.I have promised to myself I won't go there if the end of BSG dissappoints me,but I'm not sure I'll be able to keep my word...

I'm getting ridiculously excited with how excited the BSG cast is about the finale. Uniformly (well maybe except for Grace Park who was confused) they keep saying it's the greatest thing since sliced bread (ahem, or toast) and how each one of them think it's the most fitting end ever. (Makes me happy for Kara/Lee too, since I think they have to be doing right by them in the end.)

Oddly too, I feel the total disconnect with Jamie Bamber as himself vs. when he's playing Lee. (I actually prefer the American accent, but obviously he gets to be much funnier and lighthearted when he's not playing Lee.) I was not impressed with him much when I first started watching BSG but I've come to greatly enjoy his character. Will be interested to see him as a cop.

Forgot to add: Caprica looks pretty excellent. Eric Stolz is still as awesome as he was in Some Kind of Wonderful.

Ugh, that article on the young gay boy murdered. It just reads to me like every other bullshit "gay panic" defence I've read about where boys/men get away (literally) with murder because being hit on by another male is something so awful that the only way to defend one's fragile masculinity is to kill the "threat". It's hideous both from the perspective of sexual harrassment of women being ignored and diminished (you would *never* have this kind of article if it were a young boy who'd been hitting on a girl, or a man a woman, because women are just there to be hit on and sexualised) and also from a gay rights perspective.

I'm not trying to diminish sexual harrassment in schools, which clearly should be policed and addressed. However, these type of cases and then after-the-fact articles only happen with gay hate crimes (usually male) because heaven forbid a man be reduced to a sexual object and be made to feel all uncomfortable the way women are from the time they're girls.

Yeah, I totally get your point and agree with most of it.

As I said, the article was tricky because if I took the same behavior and applied it to one of my male students acting that way toward a girl, I would write it up as harassment and refer the boy to the counselor and/or administrators. That definitely doesn't excuse the murder, though. Period. The adults involved screwed up in a huge, tragic way. I'll also admit that *I'm* pretty clueless about looking at this from the larger scope you mentioned, so the "gay panic" defense hadn't occurred to me. I hope that the increased public awareness of the case will keep the defense from pulling that card, but I doubt it.

(I had a student years ago who sounds exactly like Larry. He also faced some serious problems from other students. I tried to diffuse them and help him as much as I could, but I was naive and didn't do as well as I could have. Fortunately, I've heard that he's now out and much happier.)

I've read about so many of these "gay panic" defenses and they just push all my buttons. That men get off or get massively reduced sentences because "oh noes, teh gay!" is just disgraceful and makes me feel so sick. I doubt publicity around the case would have the effect of lessening the likelihood they'd try and play that defense. If anything, it'd be more likely they would, I'd think, because it's the way that the public viscerally reacts to this Big Gay Threat to Our Boys that allows it to be in play at all.

I'm glad to hear your former student is out (and out of school) and happier. I never had to deal with the gay stuff at school myself (I didn't realise I was queer until later) but I'm always really glad to see the work the gay community does in helping rainbow youth. School must be rough as hell if you're queer; it's hard enough dealing with people's prejudices as an adult.

Very well said. This was rather what I was getting at.

God, I wish the WaPo would just LET CHANDRA LEVY DIE already. I was sick of hearing about her in 2001, I'm certainly not wanting to hear about her again. Tons of people are murdered with the cases going cold, why should she be so special? Just because she's pretty, and white, and was screwing a congressman.

Oh, I totally agree. I guess I just found the WaPo writeup interesting because I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, and we've recently had those stories about the Ramseys being proven innocent, or the Madeline McCann case being dropped for lack of a viable suspect.
