Apparently, bring my own shopping bag means that I have to bag my own groceries. ( This happened twice today. )

Your bag experience is surprising - I bring my own bag to both Trader Joe's and Target, and they still load it for me. Maybe individual store policy changes? Although I can't imagine why, since we're saving them money buying the disposable ones.

You have to get out of my brain! Dude, I was just about to post about the unfriendliness of cashiers once you hand them your own bags. I went to Target, Jubilee Foods and Wal-Mart several times within the past couple of days and guess which cashier was the *only* one to smile as she bagged my stuff? The Wal-Mart one! The girl at Target sighed quite heavily and the guy at Jubilee gave me the death glare the entire time he bagged. WTF, people? And actually I'm happy to bag my own stuff if it makes their jobs a bit easier, but seriously Target who actually sells their own reusable bags should certainly be happy when someone brings in those bags.

Also? I'm totally watching L&O:CI because even though he's older and paunchier (and really who's not?) I still adore Vincent D'Onofrio.

I'd confirm with the store about their bag policies.... Trader Joe's ALWAYS bags my groceries, and I bring bags every time.

As a cashier type, I must say I don't bag for people who bring their own bags unless they've been a great customer or elderly. I have a whole philosophy on that but I'd rather not bag anything altogether. I think the fact that you weren't in the mood to help out is funny because it makes me think, "well you weren't too tired to shop".

Cashiers like to do things like that because they mostly get treated like they are stupid, incompetent and lazy. Anything they can do to even the score is fair game. I wish people would think about who's on the other side of the counter when they walk into a store and place themselves in that situation.

Actually I'm in retail as well and when people bring in their own bags I am more than happy to bag their goods. Who cares what bag they use? And when I'm a customer I'm super-nice to the cashiers and I expect the same treatment.

Most people who bring their own and come into my store also wanna bag for themselves. It feels a bit icky to touch a stranger's things especially after they've been rude to you.

Don't get me wrong, I'm great to customers. They seem to come off (in my store) as though they are too privileged to even speak to us cashiers. Who wants to deal with that, aside from the bringing their own bag issue.

Wow. I've worked in CS as well, both in store and over the phone, and had to deal with customers who are condescending, rude, and yell at me. But never would I simply decide not to do my job just to 'even the score'. There are a lot of things I don't like about my job, but I'm still getting paid to do it.

Ah yes, I know that bagging issue well. I think some cashiers/baggers may also not be familiar with the size/shape of your bag and so the customer should do it since it's theirs?

I shop with my own grocery cart. This gives baggers fits. They get so confused and do stuff like put bread and sushi at the bottom of the cart. I tend to end up reorganizing all my groceries before I leave the store. Bonus points if the bagger is staring at me while I do it.
