I don't have Tivo, but do have a DVR. I've been recording off the HD channels and while the recordings are not HD, the picture is quite good. I'd say even better then if I recorded off the regular digital channels. I'm not even sure my DVR has an hdmi output, but I am using separate red, blue, and green component cables which provides a better picture than just a single component cable.
When I went to the Comcast office today, they told me that I could either schedule installation for whenever I can take another day off work (which won't be for at least a month), or I could get one of their DVRs and have HD immediately. I went with the DVR. And, okay, I know I'm one of those obnoxious TiVo snobs, but WOW, I am HATING it so far. Not intuitive at all, and all those menus are a pain. But... I'm going to hang onto it at least until I have that day off work, and maybe it'll get better once I'm more used to it. Here's hoping.
And why do cable companies insist on installation from 9am-5pm weekdays, thus forcing the vast majority of the population to call in sick just so we can wait around? GRR.
Heh? OK, I think you may be getting the runaround with Comcast. Why could you take a HD DVR box (which costs more) now and install it yourself, but you have to wait for installation (which I was told costs $19.95) of a regular HD box? I'm wondering if they were simply out of the regular HD boxes. Perhaps they haven't received the upgraded HDMI HD boxes yet (if you recall, my Comcast office got them the day I decided to make the switch) and just ran out of the old ones. If so, you should just be able to bring your current box to the Comcast office and make the switch yourself when it comes in. Maybe try calling the 800 number and talk to customer service. The guy I spoke with was pretty knowledgeable about these things.
There'll be one more hurdle that you might not be aware of (I wasn't until I opened the box on my HD Tivo); the HD boxes are Series 3 and no longer operate in conjunction with your set-top cable box. They require a cable card, which is a cool idea, but in practice I'm having a VERY HARD TIME getting everything negotiated with my cable company
( ... )
Ooh, I'd heard about the cable card thing, but I forgot about it until you mentioned it. Thanks for the reminder! I ended up having to go with Comcast's DVR, or else I'd have to wait several weeks for them to come out and hook up the HD -- and if I'm going to get the fancy new TV, I want the damn hi-def NOW! I figured I'd give their DVR a shot until I can manage that. Plus, so many people have the generic cable company DVRs, so they can't be THAT bad, right?
GAH! I *hate* it so far. It's utterly awful, especially after three years of the magnificence of my TiVo. I might just go ahead and order the Series 3 and let it sit on the counter until I can get Comcast out here to hook it up.
At least the hi-def is so very, very pretty on my new TV, now that I get the HD reception. *sigh*
Thanks for that link to Someecards.com. And ooooh, free wi-fi at Starbucks! Be still my heart. I might end up spending even more time and money at my local Starbucks then ever.
I've had to look at that Venn Diagram more often than I'd like to admit! I had a trip over there when I was in college and before leaving they gave us all these guidelines about how to use terms like "British" correctly so at not to offend people while over there. I think to be safe we all just ended up avoiding any geographical or historical or cultural references. :)
