Monikers and Infinity
The force between the two beings in the Master’s prison, when measured in terms of quantum graviton, always seemed to calculate to the same answer.
Infinity.
The Doctor knew, with something beyond certainty, that time was not absolute, it was woven and fluid, and that there were always to be fixed points that could not be altered or changed. Those points tethered the malleable fabric that was time in place and ensured a future for all the universe, but those points were not the people. He liked people well enough, but no one person, especially not two, should have to shoulder the burden of being one of those fixed points.
Time ignored these two beings and bent around them, ever changing and yet always the same. They were space, flat and black and unending and yet woven into that darkness were bursts of light and power. Power that, at times, was beyond reason and if it were anyone but him gazing upon these beings they would be beyond comprehension.
Yet he understood them and it was him that brought them together, knowing, and unknowing , of the consequences. For nothing such as them had existed before their resurrections and, he hoped, nothing such as them would ever be created with the misuse of time and space again.
It was time, and arrogant children, that created them and it was time that now ignored them. It blessed and cursed them with eternity and with one another and now he watched as the two beings that belonged nowhere and everywhere met and time paused, it shuddered and groaned around them, noticing them again for the first time.
A flash, a burn; two stars orbiting too close and solar winds brought with them the taste of ions and fire as the world stood still and moaned and no one, but the Doctor took notice. Two things that should never have existed, now existing in the same moment was a monumental event that he shared with no one and them.
There was a spark of recognition, an acknowledgement of their shared fate and then nothing. It was almost boring, but nothing of human interaction could ever truly be boring to the Doctor so he absorbed it from all levels. He watched Jack assess the delicate woman in his arms, he watched one of his companions find something just like him.
They were facts. Together and now never absolutely alone.
They were nothing like him-not anymore.
In that moment the Doctor, who’d had just moments before had truly become the last Time Lord and fulfilled one of his monikers, The Lonely God, watched as one of his companions was absolved from the same fate as himself and he envied him his fortuitous fate even as he introduced them.
Properly.
“Ms. Summers, I’d like you to meet Captain Jack Harkness.”
The end.
