So a couple of weeks ago I'm walking back into work after having grabbed lunch at home, and something catches my eye on the ground

I think you were being standard-ly nice/good citizen-y, I probably would have done the same. If I were the one who lost my keys, I probably wouldn't have contacted the officer to ask who found the keys I would have just thanked my lucky stars that someone out there was kind. Although, James found someones wallet when we lived in Atlanta and when he contacted the key (via email) to return it the guy was super nice and insisted on taking James out for drinks to thank him.
