Oh god, yeah, it is heinous from the other side too. I have mostly had the alternative experience of all applicants being terrible, and spending the whole interview desperately trying to coach them out of saying staggeringly do-not-hire-me things, though. ('What experience do you have of X?' 'I don't have any at all.' 'Um, OK, what do you think you would do if X happened?' 'Wow, I wouldn't know what to do, that sounds kind of scary.' OMG SHUT UP NOW.) Turning good people down sounds vile though: sympathies.

I wish you many happy hours of comfort fooding it up. I'm doing much the same with Leverage right now. Happy place, happy place, go to your happy place... *hugs*

Yeah, my supervisor and I, who did most of the work, kept telling each other, "It could be worse, we could be having the opposite problem!" I'm...not actually sure that helps.

(I've sort of done that on a phone interview--completely blew a question, though not quite to the extent of "That sounds kind of scary." Oy.)

Since I'm still doing the interview thing, it is...strangely reassuring to hear that it's just as bad on the other side. I am glad for you that you're done, though.

There is a fabulous online resource about the hiring/interviewing process from an archivist, including a ton of tips about what to do and what not to do--if I didn't already share it with you, let me know and I'll dig it out. I'm sure it's applicable beyond the archival field, and there were definitely things the author said that I'd never considered before or that reinforced what I already knew. (Seriously, after going through this from the other side, people hiring really pay attention about whether you draft your cover letter & resume to match the position, or if you just send them a cookie cutter cover letter & resume.)
