Usually dear Petzi gives us heads-up for stuff like historical anniversaries, but I'm afraid she missed this one.  So I'm gonna share, mostly 'cause I feel like it.

Go on, read it - you might get a big surprise, especially if you're used to have a Che poster hanging on the wall in your college dorm room.  Facts are amazing things, aren't they?

I admit I know almost nothing about the man. I assume there are plenty of first hand sources that this book cites?

I saw a button someone was selling on Etsy that had "Che murdered people, you trendy asshole."

Very interesting. I suspect people aren't too thrilled to be reminded of who he actually was, which was much less heroic than he comes across in the movie...

I knew next to nothing about Che Guevara previously, so I have no reason to dispute any of the stories Fontova presents. However, it's a little hard to trust the impartiality of an author who begins by gloating about his subject's murder. However fitting, however deserved, Guevara's death may have been, without a trial, it was not justice -- it was vengeance. Pretending otherwise just goes along with Che's own dismissal of "judicial evidence" as "an archaic bourgeois detail." That can't be a risible and despicable claim when it's being exercised against people we sympathize with, and laudable and righteous when it's exercised against those we dislike.

And that's before I saw Fontova's website features his appearance on Glenn Beck.

I have no particular love for Che Guevara, and maybe one day I'll learn more about him... but not, I think, from Humberto Fontova.
