The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey Chronicles II, which I ordered through the Bestsellers English bookshop in Bp, has arrived today. It isn't half as exciting as the first part was, which I bought in Vienna, sadly in German translation, but it still has some very nice Hobbit pictures (good for character visuals), nice stories about the final ( Read more... )

I'm sure the pictures alone would be worth it! And the extend version of the film is something to look forward to - they really should show the Old Took's birthday party , fingers crossed.

I haven't seen either of the new versions of the Star Trek movies - how was the first one?

It was a horrible Star Wars rip-off in some places, but otherwise rather okay, save for the fact that they blew up Vulcan in the end or whatnot.

Chris Pine is quite good at copying Shatner's horrible acting, Zachary Quinto is an acceptable young Spock, but the Uhura actress is horrible, has nothing to do with the character, and the Uhura/Spock romance (???) is forced and stupid. I wasn't truly impressed by the young Sulu, Scotty or Chekov, either, although Karl Urban does a rather likeable McCoy.

Forgot to add: if you want really good original Trek imitation, look up Star Trek Phase II on the Net. It's a fan-made series of original stories, I find them highly enjoyable. some of the original guest stars even show up, and they have Denise Crosby in a double episode, too.

I've long since realised books differ to films, TV series are different again. We are all just along for the ride of a director's version or imagination, and so I sit back and try to enjoy it. I haven't seen the new Star Trek yet either, but I've only recently seen the The Hobbit. Yes, there are some differences from the book, but not enough to seriously bother me.

That's why The Hobbit bothered me a lot less than LotR. I didn't expect it to have much to do with the book at all, and was, in places, pleasantly surprised.

Of course, there weren't such blatant character assasinations as in LotR, either.
