Apparently JKR thinks Dumbledore was gay. I... this makes me very pleased, you guys. In my gut kind of pleased. (It's not about the canon -- if it's not in the text, it's not my canon -- it's about the affirmation.)
In the meantime -- while I try to settle down from this unexpected good news --

I would reciprocate, but do you know how frustrating this meme is on dialup? )

YES. It's not canon to me because it wasn't in a book (or even a movie) but it is still awesome that she would say that, that that's how she envisioned him when she wrote.

When I was teaching the history of sexuality (including to Sangerin) we would occasionally have arguments in tutorials about whether or not we were past the need to claim great homosexuals in history as affirmation. You know, Shakespeare was bisexual, that sort of thing. Given the way the world is, still so very, very homophobic in so many places, I think the more notable openly queer people around the better. Including fictional characters.
So, again, hooray!

Yes! Mine too. Totally.

nodnod. It really does give me joy on a gut level that's nothing to do with my Harry Potter fannishness and everything to do with me as a dyke. (Though I'm totally all in favor of claiming people -- inc. historical figures -- as heroes and role models, I'm also in favor of people coming out. Or being outed by their authors. Whee!)

Especialy, y'know, for this:
On a practical level? I frequently use this icon when talking about librarians (since Fred and Giles both are them), and by extension cataloging, and by extension tagging posts on LiveJournal, which means that it's kind of defaulted to the Ari+Elizabeth Show Icon.
And now I feel like I should have an "Ari and Elizabeth show" icon.

(I've been off-and-on thinking of finding an image of Rabbit and Piglet for an official Ari 'n' Elizabeth show icon.
