I can handwave the memory thing by pretending that modifying a memory is different than obliviating a memory.

I saw spec that she may have realized Hermione and Umbridge had the same middle name, and wanted to change it. Personally, I think she just randomly changed her mind. Or possibly meant to say "Jean" in the first place.

I mean... there's a reason the concept of a flint exists. *g*

I am more creeped out that Umbridge and McGonagall have the same Patronus.

Re Unforgivable: Harry uses the Cruciatus curse in front of McGonagall, on Amycus Carrow.

Re McGonagall: I will forever love (and I've said this to so many people, but seriously, my love for it is unending) her screaming "CHARGE!" and herding the stampeding desks into the fray.

And Harry lost the Firebolt, too. :(
