The Road Goes Ever On and On

Time passes. Daniel forgets to think of Sha're one day. Time passes. A week goes by without one nightmare. Time passes. Daniel dies again. The world is symmetrical. Jack O'Neill ponders the elliptical orbit of the earth and drives all the way to Chicago to visit an old friend. Time passes. Jack undergoes terrible pain, the world continues to turn, and someone out there, Daniel is neither alive nor dead. Three Lord of the Rings movies are released, and they are off-world for all of them. Sam Carter buys Jonas Quinn the director's cut for Christmas. Jack drinks an entire bottle of double malt before he feels well enough to report to the SGC. A new year comes, and they are (as always) busy, fighting bug-eyed creatures that glow in the dark. Sam Carter says that the universe will eventually compress back into itself, a reverse birthing process. Teal'c learns to tolerate if not to enjoy fly-fishing. Sam presses into her CO's social life and discovers an array of misdemeanors so colorful that she blushes, and she's spent most of her conscious life around military men.

The day arrives when they've run out of Daniel’s coffee, and there is no longer a reason to gather in his office every morning for daily ablutions. If Jack stealthily replaces the coffee with some that Daniel had left on the highest shelf in his own pantry, no one mentions it. Jonas still thinks they're visiting him, and no one tries to disabuse him of this notion. Jack classifies the new threat as moderate and advises his team accordingly. He spends a month trapped off-world and finds what he misses most is not his teammates but his bed. He doesn’t worry about this as much as he might have two years ago.

Time passes. Sam Carter finds herself missing Jonas, and she can't think why. She feels vaguely guilty and unsettled. Time passes. Teal'c forgets that there was ever a time when Daniel wasn't on the team. Time passes. Jack O'Neill renews his casual sexual relationship with his archeologist. He doesn't contemplate it too closely, and time passes. Some injuries are too deep to ever recover from. Daniel wonders what it would be like to be tortured to death with idle, scientific curiosity. He mentions his thoughts to no one.

Sarah Gardener has quite a story to tell, if anyone cared to listen.

Daniel breaks things off with Jack when Jack retires. Jack doesn't question his decision and doesn't care. He stops shaving, grows a beard, looks more like his grandfather every day. He drinks too much, spends most of his time looking at pictures of his son, and tries to forget the eight years he spent fighting aliens. One month, not a one of his teammates visits him, and he wonders if they've died or been taken hostage.

Time passes. Eons stretch away, and still Daniel continues living. He tries to remember the vividness of ascension, but it simply doesn’t work. The memories are gone, that path is closed before him, but still. Time passes. He hikes through streams and over mountains and examines the remains of hundreds of primitive cultures. There is no end in sight. Miles to go, he says to Sam one day. Miles to go before we sleep.

"Just three more," she says, "and we can set up camp. Teal'c will take first watch."

Note: title is from "Bilbo's Song". Got it stuck in my head one day, and voila, fic.
