On Poetry

Here is my vanity post. Basically, I want to know who's reading (if you're lurking, poke your head up, please), and what you like and don't like, and whether I am (as I think) a good domestic poet, or whether I have moments that might, with time and polishing, be publishable ( Read more... )

I actually don't have a poem to suggest other than the ones I already have...I just have an honest critique...

Overall, you're right; about 80% of what you do is good domestic poetry...while the best of those come across like Linda Johnston writing as Ogden Nash, most of it really isn't submittable (and you realize that)...BUT there's 10% that have a texture to them, that have a quality that goes beyond the mundane...

And those 10% are DEFINATELY worth submitting...I've loved this work in progress; I personally don't think you should stop at 100...I think you should keep going...that's what I think...

I know you do a lot of work with rhyme, and I'd like to see you experiment with more classical forms--sonnets, villanelles, etc. I think it would be an interesting experiment. You should definitely submit, but I don't really know what good markets are, just that you should give it a try. :-)

Yeah, I actually agree with this suggestion, too...I'd be interested to see what you do with different forms...aside from the forms you've done already...

I'm not answering the poll because I haven't been reading the whole time, but I just wanted to say I almost always enjoy reading them and hope to see more.

I didn't answer the poll, simply because your poems capture so many moods and themes that it seems hard to compare one with another. My favorites definitely change based on the mood I'm in. And I have to thank you for inspiring me to try writing again (something I haven't done since high school). I definitely look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
