Regarding the possible hypothyroid issues: Please get that checked as soon as you can. It does potentially explain almost everything you've said, and I've seen too many people suffer horribly from thyroid issues for years before getting on medication and seeing physical and psychological issues dramatically improve in weeks. This is a sensitive spot for me because my grandmother was dismissed a a purely psychological case for many years before anyone figured out what was wrong. Then, even with genetics, it took my aunt far too long to get treated.

Second this. My mum is hypothyroid, and when her meds get slightly out of whack she'll be depressive and gain an amazing amount of weight. Shuffling the pills a bit brings it right back to balance. And it's fairly painless to treat compared to some conditions.

I don't have much to add that hasn't been said above (other than to please do yourself the favor of following up on the leads and advice that nevacaruso, emp42ress, and others have provided), but I never like to let a post like this go by without at least acknowledging that it was read and cared about. Lots of people care about you and want to see you well.

I hate when doctors blame everything on weight :/ One doctor once told my mom that everything that was wrong with her was her weight's fault! She was like "uhm, actually, I'm overweight because I have seizures and the constant risk of having a convulsive seizure kind of makes it hard to exercise". (Because really, who wants a convulsive seizure when lifting weights or on a treadmill? That's even riskier than having one in the house, so many ways to smash yourself up...) I was so infuriated when I heard that because the guy seemed to be implying that her lupus and stuff was the fault of her weight and...just...what? Obviously we dumped him. So you should try to find a doctor who is not a dick about it because often weight is the sign of an underlying problem, not the cause of all problems. I hope you find a better one soon. *hug ( ... )

Two bits of info:
- Call Dr. Karen Bright at Bright Dental in Somerville right now. She was recommended to me (by lediva's old roomies, the Postcritters) as someone who is reasonable about billing and handles a lot of low-income patients. She also happens to be fabulous at what she does. I have never had a less traumatic filling than the one I had with her earlier this year.

- When you can get to a medical doctor, call Dr. Beth Goldman at Mt. Auburn Hospital. She will not tell you that your problems are your weight. (If they say she isn't currently taking new patients, drop my name and say that you're my friend and I recommended Dr. G. It might help.)
