No opt-out from Australian "cyber security" govt filtering!

Please tell me this isn't really going to happen: Great Australian Firewall.

Gah! I know I can get around it by proxying everything through an off-shore vserver but I don't *want* to have to do that - it's just screwed up!

internet, australia

That doesn't stop, say, a blackhole route set for all IPs registered to a site that happens to host, say, controversial criticism of the govt.

You leave the country for 1 week, and this is what happens. *shakes head*

I sincerely doubt they'll get anywhere this time; as every other geek and associate thereof has already stated, their plan isn't feasible as it stands.

*thinks about China's internet filtering system*

If this bill is passed and implemented, my plan is two-fold:
- build a sneakernet by leaving random burnt DVDs in public areas
- pull this ADSL chip from my arm, go out & enjoy the sunshine.

^_^

I wonder how this will affect internet-based businesses in Australia (and abroad)... I doubt my chaos-inspired 'solutions' will suit their needs.

Wasn't this roundly criticised as a bad idea when China did it?

:(

Although some things are already blocked. I remember in year 12, someone was doing a project on anthrax for biology and some of the pages he tried to access for research were blocked by the government!
