There was nothing particularly unusual about it.

It was just a snow globe and not a very beautiful one at that.

Hermione had seen beautiful snow globes. She had seen spectacular Christmas globes, hauntingly beautiful winter globes, tacky tourist globes, snow globes with glitter, with snow, with tiny beads - both magical and Muggle - she knew how it felt to hold an entire universe in the palm of her hand.

But Hermione’s snow globe was special.

The orb that Hermione cradled gently within her hands was empty. There was nothing inside except for some snow flurries that raced wildly around the sphere whenever she shook it gently.

The snow was new. It symbolized the commencement of winter. At the end of the season, when winter turned to spring, the snow would disappear and be replaced with bright shards of sunlight. Hermione knew this because she had watched the globe progress through the four seasons. Snow flakes for winter, tiny particles of light for summer, golden leaves for autumn, and glitter of every colour of the rainbow for spring.

The seasons had been Draco’s idea. When they had first starting discussing the merits of creating two snow globes, he had imagined so many wonderful concepts. The two of them would meet after midnight deep within the stacks of the Restricted Section to dream of a time when the war would not interfere so heavily in their lives. They had both known it was coming - the war. They knew it would rip them apart and perhaps never return them to the place they had started.

So they created the snow globes.

It started as a means to check in on each other. Simply shake the globe and a miniature of wherever the other was would appear. At the beginning of the war, Draco had always been at the Malfoy Manor. That stunning gothic structure would appear every single time Hermione shook her globe until she started to believe that Draco had simply lost his own snow globe somewhere in one of the rooms.

But that all changed; suddenly sporadic buildings Hermione had never seen before appeared, and sometimes, vast forests Hermione knew could never exist in England.

Two months ago, it all disappeared.

Her globe’s sudden emptiness didn’t worry Hermione. She knew there were some places that magic could not find. Places with magic of their own that protected its occupants. Hermione knew that type of magic was vastly stronger than the magic of two teenagers in love.

It had been Hermione who had first wondered about transportation. Could it be possible to enchant the globe to become a portkey? She had scoured the library for weeks until she successfully enchanted the two globes into Portkey’s. Once a year, and once only, Hermione could use her own to find its partner - Draco.

It was Christmas Eve. It was time.

Closing her eyes, Hermione took a deep calming breath and activated the Portkey. She counted down from five under her breath and abruptly a hook at the base of her stomach yanked and she was plummeting through time and space.

The second Hermione’s feet slammed into the soft earth, she drew her wand. It was only as the Portkey activated that she realised the stupidity of her actions. What she was doing? She didn’t know how powerful the enchantment was - would it deliver her within inches of Draco or miles? Would Draco even be carrying his globe? Surely he would, it was Christmas Eve, he knew if there was ever a time for Hermione to find him, it would be now.

Hermione lowered her wand and looked around. She was alone in a small clearing in the middle of a sprawling forest. The sun was slowly sinking below the horizon and the light barely penetrated the thick trees that loomed above her.

“Lumos.” Her wand ignited and she held it high above her head.

“Draco?” she called softly. She knew it was foolish to announce her presence like this when she didn’t know where she was or how much danger lay within these trees.

Taking a step forward, Hermione froze as something crunched under her foot. Backing up, Hermione knelt, directing her wand to the ground.

Broken shards of glass.

Hermione swallowed thickly, not wanting to jump to conclusions, but it all pieced together so easily; how her globe hadn’t tracked Draco’s in more than two months and how she had been delivered directly to this spot. Hermione reached out and gently touched the broken shards of glass.

She closed her eyes.

He was lost to her now.

THE END
