Hermione wasn’t sure whose idea it was, but as the clock ticked over from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, Hermione found herself following Draco through the window and up the trellis to the roof.

It was beyond chilly outside; it had snowed for the majority of the day and the temperature had continued to plummet as day turned into night. Hermione blew out a breath, watching it turn to fog and drift away gently in the light breeze. Despite the chill, it was a gorgeous night; the sky was clear - perfect for Santa watching.

“There’s Orion.”

Hermione shifted closer to Draco and followed the line of his arm to the group of stars he pointed at. Her gaze moved with his gloved hand as he traced the shape with his index finger.

“The hunter,” Hermione murmured softly. She moved Draco’s hand slightly until it pointed to the brightest star in the sky. “There’s Sirius.”

“Making up a sixth of the Winter Hexagon.” Draco squinted. “Except it isn’t bright enough to see the whole thing. But there’s Procyon and Betelgeuse - the Great Southern Triangle.”

Hermione rolled onto her side and pressed her lips to Draco’s shoulder. “You clearly aced Astronomy.”

“I aced all my classes,” Draco reminded her. He tucked a hand behind his head and his silver eyes roamed over the blanket of stars. “Do you think if we stay out here long enough we’ll see Santa?”

Hermione smiled. “I remember doing that as a kid.”

Draco looked at her doubtfully. “Your parents let you climb out onto your roof on Christmas Eve, and wait for Santa with strange boys?”

“No,” Hermione smiled. “I remember waiting for Santa. I’d sit by my window for hours after my parents went to sleep, hoping to see him.”

“Did you?”

“Of course not. I was probably asleep by nine. I remember thinking I was awake for so long.” Hermione laughed. “I was so sure he existed too. How could something so beautiful not exist?”

“He doesn’t exist,” Draco said.

“Of course he does,” Hermione disagreed. “He’s everywhere. Maybe it’s just a representation of what we believed as kids. But he still exists.”

“I never believed in Santa. My father always made it perfectly clear he was the one doing the shopping and that Santa was just some childish fantasy.”

Hermione propped herself up on one elbow, looking down at him. “You always celebrated Christmas though?”

“Of course. I just always knew that Santa wasn’t the one bringing me the presents.”

Hermione bent forward and kissed his lips lightly. “If Santa did exist, what do you think he’d bring you?”

“I don’t know,” Draco smirked. “I see Santa as someone who still lives in the Dark Ages. Can’t he only make wooden toys?”

“Are you kidding? Do you see the things kids get for Christmas now days?”

“But Santa doesn’t deliver those gifts. Their parents do. If Santa delivered toys, he’d have to make them all in his workshop, and he’d be completely useless at keeping up with technology.”

“Isn’t that what his elves are for?” Hermione teased.

“What? To stalk down Muggle department stores and steal all the Muggle inventions?”

“Fine, in that case, I want a new bookshelf.”

“I want a broomstick figurine.”

Hermione laughed. “Damn, we didn’t write our letters to Santa this year.”

“Well we better stay here and wait for him.”

Hermione kissed him. “Deal.”
