Oooh! I logged onto LJ with the specific hope that you had posted another review! Thank you so much. I read every word of your review. Tonight's episode was quite interesting. I find the whole Lady Dedlock-Esther-Nemo connection to be very intruiging.
Please keep posting these reviews! Again, I'm adding this to my memories.
I am extremely flattered that you looked for the review! Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Really, doing these is a labor of love - this series deserves it, truly.
Yes, the Nemo-Lady-Dedlock-Esther Summerson mystery is becoming CLEAR, right? I can't imagine what it must have been like to read Dickens in a serialized form way back when. I was hanging on the edge of my seat while watching this series, and I got to watch it all virtually in one fell swoop.
I HATE waiting a whole week to find out what's going to happen. I mean, the first night wasn't so bad because it was the first three episodes, which were two combined hours of time. But last night's episodes were only an hour long, and I am praying this week will go by quickly.
Have you read the novel? I haven't read much Dickens, outside of Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. I'm thinking I might read the book after the series is finished, but I may wait.
Alas, I haven't read the book, but it's on my reading list for the year, definitely! I hear great things about it from others.
Hang in there with this series :) - just think - you're getting to see it in a faster format (in some ways) than the UK got to see it - they had 30 minute episodes twice a week for eight weeks! At least the PBS run is a little shorter because they've consolidated. I do like how they paced it, though - it keeps the tension up, and also allows us to absorb all the different characters without getting too confused.
I'm thrilled that you and others enjoy this series!
Excellent review once again. It's lovely to have these to look forward to until the dvds come out so I hope you will continue with them. Adore that pic of Jarndyce and Esther too. :-)
Oooh, I'm glad you liked that picture of Jarndyce & Esther - I loved it, too. So pretty.
Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm glad to do this. I was rather ill yesterday, and my one thought (silly, I know) was that I had to be well enough to write this review up! LOL, I managed, as you can see. This program really deserves it, and I plan to continue each week until the PBS broadcast is over, and by then we'll get our DVDs to keep us warm! :D
Excellent review and great caps (and I picked the one Caffy did as favourite!) I can see that it is getting "under the skin" over your side of the pond as well. I have never understood why Dickins has not been done like this before because he wrote in installments for publication in magazines of the time. He would always end on a "cliffhanger" in order to get the public to buy the next copy. I am half way through the book just now and you can identify the points where he stopped. It's a great read and not having read Dickins since school, I am enjoying his sense of humour!
lilycup did such a great job with these caps - I had a literally hundreds of caps to choose from with each episode! It was a hard task to decide which ones went in, let me tell you.
I agree - I think it was a brilliant idea to serialize Dickens in these smaller chunks for a modern audience. It's more similar to how Dickens was read, and also, it makes it easier for audiences to get a grasp on the huge cast of characters, which I think might be really overwhelming, particurlarly for a less patient younger audience. This, combined with the fancy and modern camera work, high production values and clear storytelling style, elevates this series head and shoulders above most other costume dramas.
I'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying the book - I haven't read it, but it's on my list for the year.
