It reminds me of some other strange films that I like (at least I think they're a bit strange, even though they might be mainstream) - Garden State or even Amelie.
I'm already watching it a second time! I have to go to sleep!
Not dork at all...you should see how crazed I used to be about Last of the Mohicans. ;)
I remember reading your post on CE and loving the lines. Now that I "get" them, they're even better, and more beautiful. The lines in this film are amazing - thoughtful, poetic, interesting. That along with the cinematography really make this film incredibly beautiful (even without all the the pretty and charismatic actors).
I'm just remembering other things I love...Tony Leung's flight attendant girlfriend nude in bed, with the airplanes resting on the curves of her back. Gorgeous. The way Faye played with the airplane. The fish. Her startlement when she comes to Tony Leung's door with the bag of fish. Oh dear..it's all spilling out! :D
You and me both! :D I was a complete nutter about it.
I'm also in love with that soundtrack. I remember during the summer of 1993, my family drove out to Colorado, and we were in the Denver area for one week. We were staying in a cabin at a camp site one mile above Denver, and the drive took about the length of the soundtrack. Every single day for that entire week, I listened to that soundtrack on my headphones, twice a day, and willed myself into that film playing in my head while we curved our way up or down the twisty mountain road.
One of my favorite scenes:Cora: What are you looking at, sir? Nathaniel: I'm looking at you, miss. I love the way she looks at him, and then looks down, while he just gazes at her steadily. Ahhhh.
Alas, my only remaining LotM icon is a scary one. ;)
It was my first Wong Kar Wai movie (and since then I'm a fan of his work) and my first Takeshi Kaneshiro movie (also fan of him since). I wanted to see the movie because of Tony, who I had seen in Hard Boiled with Chow Yun-Fat. I love him since that one, but I wanted to see him in something 'less' tragic. I love him taking to everything in his appartment... and Faye is so cute!!
It's my first Wong Kar Wai film, also, but I've gone on Netflix and added a bunch of his films to my queue, as well as many other films from Asian cinema. I want to know some of what you guys are talking about! :D I'm so glad that you all introduced me to Chunking Express. It's delightful. At first I wasn't sure if I liked Tony Leung, but by the time the film was over, I loved him. I wish the movie was longer - I want to know what happened next!
If you haven't seen 2046 yet, I recommend seeing a few of his others first because 2046 (which is my favourite after CK Cxpress) is the last in a 'notional' series. It sort of goes:
Days of Being Wild In the Mood for Love 2046
2046 resonates a lot more if you've seen the first 3 already. I haven't seen Happy And Sad Together, Fallen Angels or Ashes and Dust yet although I own all of them.
Hmmm. I have angst actually. I fight with myself about which I like better. CK Express/2046. Then I decided I didn't have to choose ;)
I've been wanting to see In the Mood for Love since it was released in the U.S., and I've nearly bought the Criterion Collection version ($40USD) several times...it sounds like exactly the kind of film that I would like (the reviews were so good for it when it came out here). Last year, when I was in London, I saw all these posters in the Tube for 2046 but if it ever played in DC, I missed it.
btw, love the Faye icon! She's just too cute for words.
