The Wire is, hands down, among the very best television I've ever seen done. And one of the things I love best about it is that it's patient storytelling. Of course, I have the fortune of being able to watch two episodes at a time (or more, but I rarely have time for that) if I want, but still, I love how both the major arcs and minor arcs are doled out in meaningful little parcels, often subtle, always demanding the viewer pay attention to every little thing.

I think you're right about the second season (which we polished off Friday night) taking things to a different level - there's a much wider picture revealed, that was only hinted at in how the s1 investigation's "follow the money" turned up the political dealing & real estate development angle. To me I felt like it wasn't just about the city of Baltimore, the economics and the way that the city is transforming and hurting, but also it began to give us this absolutely huge multi-tentacled international crime beast.
