Did you know that this movie was actually made for TV? But it was such a big hit that they showed itm in the cinemas over here again and then went into international distribution :)
I love her kitchen ... the tiles remind me of the old kitchen in the pre-war house we lived in when I was a kid. Those thick, blocky white and blue tiles are so typical for German old houses.
Martina Gedeck is one of my favourite actresses, she is so down to earth and normal looking. Not like the thin Hollywood actresses.
That is so awesome that a made-for-tv film could actually gain such a following - it was an official selection for all those film festivals! I shall think of it now as the "little film that could." ;)
I love Martha's kitchen, too, as well as Martina Gedeck. One thing I love about many European actresses is that they often have a down-to-earth quality and a "normal-ness" about them that Hollywood actresses rarely have because Hollywood only promotes the young, gorgeous, thin girls to the exclusion of virtually anything else, which usually translates to "less interesting." Which is not to say that there are no interesting or down-to-earth actresses, but they are the exceptions.
Actresses like Martina Gedeck have so much life experience in them, and I particularly love her subtlety: she does amazing tiny things with her face and posture that speak volumes - she doesn't need to do much to amply convey every emotion and make her characters breathe and really live.
