YAY! actually i was kinda hoping that you would do a review on it and you did! <33333
it'll be showing over here next week, and i am really looking forward to it because so many of my loves are all rolled into one film. watanabe ken, nakamura shido and NINO!! omg. (>.<) *looking forward to it*
:) It was an amazing film. I'm still in such awe at it. And yes, the soundtrack is out here, so I think I will be picking it up, as I really liked what I heard.
I just saw Letters today too, and just looking at these pictures makes me feel kind of wibbly again. It was really good, and, like you said, it was really nice to be able to hear Japanese in a movie theater like that (and be able to pick up the little things they didn't bother to subtitle). And Nino was amazing, but all the acting was really good (which only made it harder to watch, but I can't complain). War movies usually bore me, but I was really impressed with this one.
See, I like such a variety of films, including war films (among my all-time favorite films are Black Hawk Down and The Thin Red Line, for ex) so I knew I wanted to see this one, especially when the reviews were so good. I'm glad you gave it a shot, too! You're right: Nino was amazing, but everyone was amazing. Even the characters that you hated were so good, and I really felt their despair and their fear which led them to do what tthey did.
I wasn't sure if I was going to see this, because I was disappointed in Flags, but it sounds amazing. Thanks for reviewing it, because otherwise I might have skipped it. :)
Oh, definitely give it a shot. From what I've read, FoOF was crap and this is pure gold. I'm glad I didn't bother with FoOF. I can't say enough good things about Letters, though, and I'd love to hear your impressions one you get a chance to see.
I would just like to say that I loved Nishi as well! The last scene with his horse! SO SAD! Poor horse!y! *frown*
And the way you felt about hearing Japanese in a feature film in a movie theater is like the same reaction I had when I saw Kimura Takuya in 2046 in a movie theater two years ago. Yes, I swooned for Kimura, but hearing him speak the Japanese with such raw emotion was so much love. :D
I have that same feeling for Kimura in 2046 (which if you didn't know, is one of my all-time favorite films)! koalathebear loved Kimura so much in that film that she ripped a lot of his dialogue, and this is our favorite: Rainbow. I keep this with the soundtrack because it's not the same to listen to "Adagio" without hearing Kimura's voice and these words, which are so gorgeous.
And yes, Nishi with the horse was hearbreaking. The way he just kept saying "yosh" to the poor horse. :'(
Oh dear. Nino is rather cute (first exposure to him). And Ken Watanabe??? *sigh* I hope this comes out soon in Jakarta. Thank you for the picspam and review :)
You're welcome! I highly recommend this film. The acting, writing, photography and direction are all fantastic, but the film overall is just a really good film about culture and the futility of war and of the ordinary people who it traps and destroys.
