Brief comments on five films

Aug 09, 2006 09:45

skippyness came over last night and we had gyoza and watched two wonderful films. The first was Shine, the beautiful film about David Helfgott that won Geoffrey Rush an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1997. Ness had given this to me for Christmas (brought it all the way from Oz for me) but I'd insisted that we should watch it together. It was lovely! I ( Read more... )

It's very cute! HJ is gorgeous, and Woody Allen isn't nearly as annoying as he sometimes can be.

Tony Leung is indeed wonderful, and I love Faye's pursuit of him as well in CE!

I loved the first series of Doctor Who - you can search my tags for my broken-hearted review of 1x13. I still cry when I even think about that episode. I enjoyed what I saw of the second series with Tennant, but I have to catch up. I've been sidetracked by doramas and JE these last few months, and I need to finish watching the last half of the series. I hope you enjoy it when it airs for you!

It is always interesting for me that people have such different reactions to everything. I love it.

I have seen "Shine", it is fantastic. I don't normally like films about events which happened in real life, but this film is so heart-wrenching.

I don't mind watching biographical films, so long as they are made well. But that's because I like just about any kind of film, so long as it is good - which is entirely subjective, of course. :)

I'm glad you liked Shine also!

Want to see Scoop because I love Hugh Jackman! ;) but the 'Who killed the electric car?' sounds very interesting... especially now with the price of oil so high (at least here) :/

I highly, highly recommend Who Killed The Electric Car? It's not quite as good as An Inconvenient Truth, but it's up there. Very, very thought-provoking film!

And Scoop was very pretty - Hugh Jackman was just gorgeous and lovely. I hope you like it when you get a chance to see it. It's really not a very brainy film, but it's light and fluffy and pretty.

Yup, I do know about the Tony Leung/Wong Kar Wai connection. In fact I've seen all of his Wong Kar Wai films except Ashes of Time which I tried, but I couldn't get through at all. I'll try it again some day.

I'm a big fan of 2046 and I actually watched the trilogy all in one evening back in January, I believe. You can search my tags for the links to my comments.

I haven't seen City of Sadness, but I adore Infernal Affairs, which I also posted briefly about (very briefly!). It's a great film.

I have heard about the upcoming Scorcese remake, but I'm not really happy about it. Scorcese has been hit or miss lately, and I have a hard time imagining the film without Tony and Andy.

Thanks for the pics!

The movie requires the audience to pay close attention to little details that hint on the characters' emotional wounds and burdens, how they cross paths with each other.

Ah, yes! I am familiar with this in WKW's films. As I said previously, I couldn't get into Ashes of Time when I first tried it, but I never say never, so no doubt at some point I will try it again, and it might just work for me then. After all, most people really don't like or don't get 2046, which also requires effort and patience.

Thank you for your comments. :)
