~~Angel's Tale: Part 1~~
~PROLOGUE~
The world had turned white. At least, where he was.
Tetsu smiled as he saw the pure white snow that had enveloped the town. Carefully he walked along the street, admiring the scenery around him. There was a certain sweetness in the air. Maybe it was just that time of year. There were people going about shopping or busying themselves with other things.
Reaching into his coat pocket with mittened hands, Tetsu pulled out a woollen hat and pulled it over his head, covering his short brown hair. He smiled occasionally at passer-bys who glanced his way. The shops he walked beside were all decorated and ready for the festive season.
He was turning around the corner, when he heard the sound of an acoustic guitar being played, the soft melody accompanying those around it. After a while, a voice gently sang in a low tone.
"Mune no oku tojikometa
tooi hi no taisetsu na
Angel's tale..."
Curious, Tetsu headed to where the music seemed to be coming from. The song...and the person singing it...he didn't know what it was that he needed to see. He then spotted someone with blond hair sitting along the street. People were walking by in front, not even looking at him. Despite that, he continued to play the guitar and sing.
Tetsu couldn't see his face from the dark glasses he wore, but he appeared to be quite well-dressed for a beggar. He couldn't think of any other reason for someone to be out playing music on the streets while it was lightly snowing.
A few of the people that walked there dropped a note or some coins to him. Tetsu went over to make a contribution as well. He couldn't help finding the voice singing beautiful. Somehow, he wanted to talk to him.
"Excuse me..."
The song stopped. Pushing his dark glasses up and reaching a hand to the scarf around his neck to neaten it, the blond smiled at Tetsu. "Yes?"
Up-close he looked younger than Tetsu had thought.
"Would you mind," the stranger suddenly said. "Counting the money that I collected?"
"Eh?" Tetsu was surprised by the request. "You want me to help you?"
The blond nodded. "I trust you."
"Are you..." Tetsu wanted to ask, but didn't know how to. He noticed that the blond had not turned to look at him and was pushing the money the same way too.
"Yes," he answered simply. "I can't see."
"I...I'm sorry..."
"It's alright."
"Will you be staying here for long?" Tetsu asked worriedly. "It's pretty cold."
The blond dusted snow off his short hair and smiled. "I guess not."
"Where do you live? I can take you there."
He kept his guitar carefully in its case before getting to his feet. "I don't live anywhere."
"You don't have a place to go?"
"I don't need pity," he said kindly. "Thanks for the concern anyway."
"But-" Tetsu followed him as he walked.
"I'm not helpless. I would appreciate it if you could help me count the money though."
"Sure." Tetsu quickly counted the money in his hand. The amount was pretty generous.
"Thank you." the blond took several notes without looking and stuffed the rest into his pocket.
"I was thinking..." Tetsu spoke up.
"Yes?"
"You can come home with me...stay for a short while...have a hot drink or something..."
The blond was quiet at first, before finally responding, "That would be nice."
"It's not far from here," Tetsu said as he held on to his arm.
"You're a kind person." The blond smiled.
"It's not much," Tetsu replied. "I just want to do something for you."
They walked on, Tetsu growing more curious about his companion.
"I'm sorry for asking, but have you been blind all your life?"
"You can say that. I survived fine with it so far."
Tetsu wanted to, but refrained from asking more. He shouldn't be rude to his guest.
As they went past people in tattered clothes, the blond gave out a few notes each from the ones he held in his gloved hand.
"You're giving them away?" Tetsu looked at him in surprise.
"I just want to do something for them." He was repeating what Tetsu had said earlier.
Tetsu was even more puzzled. The blond was a well-dressed but blind beggar with no home, who gives away money that he took the time to collect and probably need himself.
They soon reached Tetsu's apartment. Settling down inside, the blond took off his gloves and placed them beside him on the cream-coloured sofa. There was a big ring on his right hand. As if sensing that Tetsu was watching him, he smiled.
"I'm sure that this is a nice place."
Tetsu felt sadness as the blond ran his hand across the material of the sofa. He shouldn't, but he wished that his guest could see the world as he did. He got up from his seat.
"I'll make us coffee."
"Thank you. May I ask, what's your name?"
"I'm Tetsu."
"Tetsu..." the blond said the name before his lips curled into a smile.
Tetsu returned to the living room a while later with a mug of hot coffee in his hand. He handed it to his guest, who thanked him politely before taking a sip of the drink.
"What do I call you?" Tetsu asked as he sat down.
"Hyde."
"I see." Tetsu smiled. "How is the coffee, Hyde?"
"It's nice and hot."
Tetsu turned to his right where a small Christmas tree was. It had only been decorated halfway, with a few ornaments on it and an angel that sat on top.
Seeming to know that Tetsu was looking at the little angel, Hyde placed his mug down. "Have you heard about the story..."
"Story?" Tetsu asked him.
"An angel's tale..."
"What is it about?"
"The sad story of an angel that fell in love with a mortal."
"I haven't heard of it. Do you mind telling me the story?"
"It's a story of two beings who were happy together, even though their love was forbidden," Hyde recalled the story. "The angel came upon the mortal one day. A person in a pitiful state that the angel wanted to help him. They fell in love eventually, but it was short-lived."
"Why was it short-lived?"
"The mortal grew sick with an incurable disease and slowly wasted away before the angel's eyes. Unable to bear his lover tormented by so much pain, the angel cried and asked for others like him to help. But no one would help the angel that had forsaken their important rule. They couldn't even if they wanted to."
"Then...what did he do?"
"The goodness in the angel dimmed as his lover grew close to passing away. Overcome by desperation, he tried to exchange his lover's soul with another person's, hoping to give the one he loved a body that wasn't racked with pain. But fate wasn't kind to the angel. His lover died and he ended up killing an innocent person."
"What happened after that?"
"The angel was punished. He had fallen for a mortal and killed another. As it was because he was blinded by love, he was banished from the skies and left to grief as a mortal without ever being able to see. He was anguished, but it was the price he had to pay for what he had done."
"That's sad..." Tetsu mumbled. "Was he ever forgiven?"
"I don't know." Hyde shrugged. "I heard that he and his lover reincarnated many times but their paths never crossed. If they did, they wouldn't know either."
"Why's that?"
"Because the angel was always blind and his lover had no memory of the past they shared."
"That's heartbreaking..."
"It's just a story." Hyde smiled faintly.
"I guess so." Tetsu nodded, even though he felt a pang in his heart. He wondered why it was beating so rapidly too.
Hyde stood up. "I better get going."
"Where will you stay?"
"I'll find a place." Hyde smiled as he walked to the door. He appeared to remember where it was.
"Hyde," Tetsu called out, going to him. "Want me to take you down?"
"I'll be fine."
Tetsu stayed by the door as Hyde stepped out of his place. "Do you know the name of the angel?"
Hyde shook his head. He took off the dark glasses he wore before looking at Tetsu with unseeing eyes. They seemed to be searching for him even though he was standing right before him.
Tetsu could see that he had pretty eyes, which he soon hid back under his glasses.
"I wish...I could see you, Tetsu..."
Hyde's voice was filled with such sadness that Tetsu felt it as well.
"Goodbye, Tetsu. Maybe someday I'll meet you again." Hyde smiled before he left.
Tetsu closed the door, not knowing why...a tear had rolled down his cheek.
