As though the Doctor's bedroom is so unlived in that you could mistake it for a guest room.
You know, funnily enough, I hadn't really thought of that, or at least not quite in that way. I had your second observation more in mind when I wrote that--and was thinking also that possibly one of the reasons the Doctor doesn't sleep much, other than the "Time Lords don't really need to sleep much" thesis, is that he also has terrible nightmares. Something about a space that's *only* for sleeping.
Half-formed thoughts. :) I have some planned expansions for this, though, so I'll have to keep that in mind.
I haven't read the other challenge fics yet (I wanted to avoid being influenced) but I'm looking forward to yours, and stand in awe of your ability to turn out a 5-chapter fic in a month's time!
Thanks for reading!

I'm trying to form some type of feedback besides this is absolutely incredible and you're an amazing author.
Please allow me to point out some of my favorite lines.
Jack blinked. “He put you up to this?”
“And Martha, and Gwen. They’re worried about you, Jack.”
That made perfect sense. I can also see how the Doctor would be one of the few if not the only person that could reach him. Yes, the Doctor knows a thing or two about self hatred. *sniff*
And this is where you nearly killed me:
Jack closed his eyes when he came, crying out in equal parts pleasure and grief. The Doctor curled around him, shielding him, sheltering him.*sobs* How painfully beautiful!! *sniff ( ... )

The Doctor curled around him, shielding him, sheltering him.
Oh, that's about my favorite line in this. I'm glad you liked it too. :D
It's obvious Jack had to be in a terrible place to physically strike the Doctor. With everything he's been through, I can see him reacting like that.
I'm glad that worked. :) The Doctor was also deliberately provoking him, but I'm not sure he actually thought Jack would hit him.
I kind of got to the point with this where I couldn't see the forest for the trees anymore, it had been in my head for so long. There were some changes/additions that I had in mind but just didn't have in me before the close of the challenge--but I might try to tackle them in a few weeks, before I repost anywhere. :)
::hugs you again!!::

Either way, I know I'll be rereading this when you repost to your journal. Yes, it was that good. ;)

Of course it would take intervention by the Doctor to help Jack heal, he's probably the only person in the universe who can comprehend the type of damage that immortality can cause someone. So much more pain accumulated than one could experience in just a single lifetime without the ultimate release of old age, senility, and death. Okay, I'm depressing myself.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this. I love your writing and look forward to your next.

I think the Doctor is the only one who can really understand the scale of the loss Jack has experienced. But also, more than Jack, he understands that life goes on, and there's a possibility for happiness and maybe even redemption even after you've done something terrible.
Don't get depressed. Jack and the Doctor will always have each other! (And they'll always be young and good-looking.)
