I love this retelling of the Who saga, everything is just familiar enough to recognize and yet changed in a way that makes it seem real more please?

I'm not at all familiar with Wynn Jones' work but this fic was absolutely gorgeous! Engrossing, lovely and perfect. I love your writing style and like the above commenter I would adore more in this universe if you ever desire to write it. I completely want to see the rest of their adventures!

If Wynn Jones' writing is anything like this beautiful fic then I really should look into reading it one day.

Thank you for posting! :)

Oh man I'm so glad I could draw in people who haven't read the book! I just thought it would be a fun universe for the Doctor Who characters to play in without changing their fundamental selves too much.

I am also really flattered that you want a sequel. It hadn't occurred to me that folks might want more! I guess I'll have to use wintercompanion prompts to get my creative juices flowing again.

I haven't read Homeward Bounders, but this fic makes me want to. Only now I'm already spoiled for it. Hmmm...

Anyway, fantastic fic! I love all the worlds you create and the timey-wimeyness and the depth of feeling. I felt terrible for Nine when he realized he'd now lost everything, including Jack. And I was so happy when they found Amelia. Maybe she'll stay with them for a while?

If Jack and the Doctor find all the Homeward Bounders, or most of them, and teach them Rule One an/or take them Home, there'll be no more disbelief in the other worlds, right? So They will lose their power? What will happen then?

....I do think we need a sequel. ;)

I said spoilers for the whole book just to be safe, but truth be told, I haven't really spoiled everything. The major plot twist I've given away is that the game is rigged and even if you do manage to get Home it won't really be Home anymore, but I actually significantly changed who They are and how They maintain Their control over the multiverse. So by extension, the means to beat Them at Their game in the book is also quite different. I think you might still get a kick out of the book. Diana Wynne Jones is a great writer ( ... )

This was amazing! I'm not at all familiar with The Homeward Bounders, but I loved the way you wove that world into the Whoniverse, and especially what you did with Jack's character. And the Timey Wimey-ness with Ten! That worked so beautifully. Thank you!

Ahh thanks! At first I had Harkness as just a random kindly person Jack meets in his travels whose name he takes in tribute, but then I realized it would be so much more fun if Harkness were the Doctor after all.

How much did I enjoy this story? Well, after reading it I went straight to Amazon, bought The Homeward Bounders on Kindle, and then spent the rest of my day reading that. I've always loved Diana Wynne Jones but never gotten around to reading this one, so thanks. :)

I have to say I'm not so curious about what happened after -- the ending is nicely emotionally definitive -- as what happened before, or during, just because I'd love to know more about the Doctor's other companions in this universe. Romana seems to have stayed at Home (which is interesting given that in the show she ended up wandering even further than the Doctor), but Donna travelled with the Doctor after Jack, like on the show. Do you imagine his other companions were other Homeward Bounders, or did he meet them in different ways?

Oooh, if I inspired you to do that then I've done my job! I read the book earlier this summer and knew in my bones it was ripe for a crossover.

I imagine his other companions as Homeward Bounders as well, yes. My OT3 shipper side wants them to find Rose and fall in love with her, only to have major angst when she finally does find Home.
