ARGH BBC COSPLAY

Feb 09, 2012 14:35

Just need to rant a bit about trying to do costumes based on anything BBC.

Okay, I'm coming at this from years in anime fandom, where cosplaying is quite a bit different:  you're always creating, often from whole cloth, outfits based on drawings and animation.  Problems tend to involve lack of actual gravity, unknown materials, the way things will ( Read more... )

Aw! *Hugs!* I can see how cosplaying live-action shows can be harder than anime as you don't have much "accuracy leeway." After you showed me http://wearsherlock.tumblr.com/ I was also surprised on how costly the actual items are and that the show's budget is large enough to accommodate all these things (though perhaps they're sponsored for product placement and get to use them for free?...hmmm...). I can only imagine what you're going through right now. I mean, for me, I'm only looking for the right fabric to make my own deerstalker and not looking to create an entire cosplay (yet...). Despite checking everywhere, including Amazon (though I'd rather inspect the fabric in person), I cannot find the right tweed pattern to match the one being sold online/in the show. I want to sew it because I think I can sew it for half the price. Plus, I can dictate the quality and sizing of it. But...if only I could find the right fabric! Anyways...hang in there! My heart goes ( ... )

Yeah, I'd love love love to know who decided every single coat John wears will cost at least 400 pounds new... and then there are his damn shirts...

The internet is such a tease sometimes. I was told that everything would be on it! :P

I get it. OMG do I get it. We hunted and hunted for legit Rose items that would fit Jess, and in the end had to settle for "cheap, pieced together, and gets the point across". That's sort of the theme for my Jack Harkness and Master as well. Now the Doctor - well, I got fiendish_thingy's suit as close as I could, but I'm NOT a master tailor. :)

Anyway, I feel your pain. I have a few other shows/fandoms I follow and want to cosplay in, but dear GOD, can't afford, can't find, just can't.

Exactly. And then if you're playing someone of a different gender you have to decide if you're doing crossplay or fem!them or something in the middle and items and fit becomes a whole *new* can of worms...

Stupid BBC. :P

You both looked lovely at last D*Con, btw, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing you at this one's.

Yeah, what's with this lack of unlimited wealth? Someone should get on that.

Oh boy, I've been there and I sympathize.

Problems tend to involve lack of actual gravity

And this is exactly why I tend to make a lot of original designs... I am not patient enough to be able to put all the time necessary into hunting down fabric/acessories for screen-accurate costumes. I always take shortcuts, then regret it later.

Also, gravity. I am never making a complicated anime costume ever again for that reason.
