But the alarm is a deterrent. Burglars are emboldened by the thought that they can do their dirty work in secret, and their break-in won't be discovered until they're long gone. Having an alarm blaring throughout the house would likely be enough to scare one (or even two or three) off. They create confusion and panic, and I speak from experience.
