I was thinking about writing a post asking which authors whose work my friends would purchase immediately upon its release, without really knowing or caring what the book was about, when edith_jones asked a similar question of me. The ones you might stumble upon at Costco and say "Squee! New book by so-and-so!" and snap it up without ever even realizing that ( Read more... )

I tried doing the library thing a few years ago and it just didn't work for me. Maybe we just have lame libraries in Phoenix, but I couldn't find more than a few of the books on my "want" list.

Of the names you mention, I'm familiar with Pratchett (though I've discovered that I really can't get into him. I've read a few, but none of them has really gripped me). The other authors I've never read at all - are they like Pratchett?

I have heard of Trillin - I think he and Dave Barry are actually friends - but have never been interested enough in the foodie culture to be really notice (except in the case of James Lileks and the Gallery of Regrettable Food).

I've also heard of Stephenson, but he's one of those writers who's just on the periphery on consciousness. I've heard of Cryptonomicon, but not Quicksilver. I do tend to get annoyed when historical liberties are taken, though (viz my strong objections to the movie Elizabeth).

I'm a bit of a skinflint when it comes to buying books, but I'd definitely snatch up something new from any of the following writers at a used book store:

* Neil Gaiman
* Terry Pratchett
* Christopher Moore
* Neal Stephenson

I'm also on the lookout for filling in any gaps in my Robert A. Heinlein collection (main item missing: Tramp Royale
