Summary: The seasons of Will and Finn
Summer
It was way too hot to be doing anything at all, quite frankly, but Will had lessons to plan. He allowed himself to dress for the heat, though - loose jeans and a short sleeved t shirt, no vests for him today. He was getting a sip from the water fountain in a desperate attempt to cool himself, when he got knocked over onto the ground. A shadow fell over him and it was Finn Hudson, new starting quarterback for the football team, one huge lump of awkwardness and, clearly, calamity.
"I'm so sorry, Mr Schu!" he said, hurriedly. "Are you okay? Do I need to take you to the nurse? Shit, shit, I am so sorry!"
Will just took his outstretched hand and brushed himself off. "I'm fine, Finn, don't worry." He smiled gently. "Just try to be more careful next time? You're not really supposed to run in the hallways..."
"I know, but no one was around I thought, and it's fun. Still sorry!"
Will smiled. "It's fine. So, how's football going? I hear you're the new starting quarterback."
Finn nodded excitedly. "Yeah, I used to be the reserve quarterback, but Scotty Daniels graduated, he was the old quarterback, so now it's me!"
"Congratulations, Finn. I'll see if I can catch one of your games so I can cheer for you."
"You totally should! Then you can see the Cheerios perform, too - it's like two shows for the price of one... which is free."
Will laughed. Ah, the Cheerios. He felt so bad for those girls - he'd heard that Sue Sylvester could be a tyrant, though she'd always been nice enough to him. "Well then. I'll see what I can do. I'm sure you'll be great, though, Finn."
Finn beamed. "Thanks! I-- I hope so. I have to get back to practice now." He hurried back off down the hallway, hoping to not trip over himself or knock anyone else over.
Will smiled to himself. He loved the excitement of the beginning of a school year.
Fall
Will looked around for his sweater. He hated living in Lima, sometimes, because it always got chilly so early. Not frigid yet, mind you (and thank God for that because Figgins never let the heater go as high as it needed to) but chilly enough that he needed something to stay warm. He found a scarf in his bottom desk drawer and hoped it would be good enough.
"Hey... Mr Schu?"
Will looked up and grinned. "Oh, hey, Finn. I have to say - that football game Friday night was one of the most exciting ones I've seen in a long time. You were great. Congratulations."
Finn blushed. "Thanks, Mr Schu. I actually came here partly about that - I want to thank you. It never would have happened without you."
"Actually, I think Kurt's mostly to blame - I'd never have thought to teach the Single Ladies dance."
"Still, you helped. You helped me. I think... maybe there's hope. For my future. If we keep winning games, anyway."
Will looked at him and saw himself reflected - the only difference was that Finn didn't have as many people rooting for him. He didn't have the same confidence that made things so easy for Will. "Hey. You were great out there. I don't know much about football, but you showed talent. And besides that, you're doing great with Glee. Just work on your grades a little, and you'll be surprised by how many options you have."
Finn exhaled, nodding. "I'm doing my best. And hey! Did you hear that Matt and Mike and Puck are joining Glee Club?"
"Last names?"
"Matt Rutherford. Mike Chang. Puck. Joining Glee Club."
"Really? That's great!" He paused for a moment and then realized, "Glee Club will have all the members needed to compete! That's perfect!" He nodded at Finn. "And all thanks to you."
"Well... I dunno. I think Puck thinks it'll get him more MILFs, I saw Mike checking out Kurt's ass when we were practicing, and Matt... actually, I dunno about Matt. He doesn't really talk. But yeah! We'll have enough members."
"See? It's all going to be okay," Will said, coming to stand by Finn and squeeze his shoulder. "Just you wait."
Finn smiled softly. "Thanks, Mr Schu."
"I'm always here for you," Will replied, patting his back. "Don't forget it."
Winter
"Oh, hey Mr Schu. Sorry - I'll just leave."
"You have as much right to be in the Choir Room during Lunch as anyone else, Finn. Kinda surprised you're not in the lunch room, though. I mean, it's cold in here."
Finn sighed. "It's more quiet in here, though. And I dunno... I don't like the cafeteria. I can see them pity me. I don't want to be pitied."
"They don't pity you, Finn," Will replied, pulling up a chair and sitting next to him. "They might feel bad for you, yes, because you've been through a lot--"
"Then they think I'm an idiot. Because I am an idiot. I just don't want to have to see it on their faces."
"You're not an idiot either," Will said, quietly. "No more of an idiot than I am. You trusted Quinn because you loved her. I trusted Terri because I loved her. We could never have imagined that the people we loved would do what they did... especially regarding something so important."
Finn nodded. "Still. Still sucks."
"Damn straight."
After a long pause, Finn gave a half smile. "You cursed. You're a teacher, teachers can't curse."
"Yeah, yeah. Go rat me out to Figgins, see if I care." He looked over at Finn. "You're going to be okay, you know."
"I-- I am? What-- how do you know?"
"Because I know you. I haven't been wrong about you yet."
"Well, thanks. Are-- are you okay? I mean, I get if you don't want to talk about it, but you... you had a pretty rough time too."
"I did. But I'll get through it." His voice became quieter. "I have dreams about my little girl sometimes but... I'll get through it. And so will you."
"Thanks, Mr Schu. And thanks for writing me that letter of recommendation."
"It was an honor," Will replied, honestly. "Now here, eat these cookies - your metabolism is way better than mine."
Finn's eyes widened. "Cookies?"
Spring
"Mr Schu! Mr Schu, are you in there?"
"Yes, hold on a second!" Will called, hurrying to the door. "Sorry, I was trying to fix my window, the hinge broke, and I want some of that breeze in here. What's up?"
"Mr Schu," Finn said, urgently, pushing a letter into his hands. "Mr Schu, look!"
Will looked down at the paper and then back up. "Finn." His face broke out into a large grin. "Finn, congratulations."
"That's a full scholarship," Finn continued, poking at the paper. "Room and board and everything!"
Will placed a hand on Finn's shoulder, and then thinking better of it, pulled him into a hug. "Finn, I am so proud of you. I knew you could do it."
"I didn't," Finn replied, squeezing him. "I think you believed enough for the both of us."
Will pulled back to look at him, still grinning. He shook his head. "I don't even know what to say that wouldn't be really sentimental and embarrassing. Look at you, you're finally escaping Lima!"
"I'll come back sometimes," Finn said quickly. "It's not like you'll never see me again or anything."
"I should hope not," Will said, solemnly. "As a teacher, I would never play favorites, but... I really will miss you."
"I'll miss you too. Do you ever wonder... what things would be like in a totally different time and place? Like if I met you ten years from now, in New York City, instead of here, when I'm still 17 and you're my teacher."
Will looked at him carefully. "Things would be completely different." He moved back over to his window, concentrating on it and purposely not looking at Finn. "And things won't be the way they are now forever, either. They're about to change. You're about to go to college, and you'll meet so many people who will change your life..."
"I can't imagine any of them being half as important to me as you," Finn almost-whispered. "I thought about not accepting the scholarship. Lima Community College--"
"--shouldn't even cross your mind, Finn. You need to get out of here and do great things. You are so much better than this town."
"But this town has the person I love," Finn whispered, heading for the door. "And I'm kind of a hopeless romantic."
Summer
There was no way this broken water fountain could do a single thing to combat the intense heat - such was a summer in Lima. Will sighed and finally gave up. He had other things to worry about, after all, like this lesson plan he still needed to finish.
There was a tap at his back, gentle, hesitant. He turned around and saw Finn, standing in front of him, hands shoved in his pockets. "Hey," Will said, making sure to keep his distance. "What are you doing here? Don't classes start soon?"
Finn nodded. "I leave tomorrow morning, actually."
"Then you should probably pack."
"I have packed," Finn replied, quickly. "Um, mostly. There's still something I need to take care of."
Will swallowed, his throat dry. "Y-yeah?" he asked, cursing his voice for shaking. "What's that?"
And then Will almost fell over with the force of Finn's kiss, but Finn's arms went around him to keep him on his feet. He reached his hands up to Finn's face and kissed back. He had been waiting for this for a very, very long time. Felt like years.
"Finn," he breathed.
"You," Finn responded. "You. Listen, there are cell phones and web cams and cars. And carrier pigeons and mail couriers and this--" he let Will stand on his feet and motioned at the space between them. "This is real. And I don't care what it takes, I want it."
"You're about to go to college. You're embarking on the most exciting part of your life, and you really want to be stuck with your high school glee club teacher?"
"It was all I could think about all year," Finn replied, shyly. "Being with you. We can do it now - I just turned 18 yesterday."
"Oh jeez," Will muttered, closing his eyes. "Seriously? Just yesterday?"
Finn grabbed his arm. "It doesn't matter. Nothing matters, except this. Mr Schu-- Will-- this is happening. Unless you don't want it, but I know you do."
"You really are a hopeless romantic," Will laughed. "Seriously, long distances relationships suck."
"But my life would suck even more without you," Finn replied, quickly. "Like the song. Look, kiss me now or regret it for the rest of your life."
"Fair point," Will said, thoughtfully. And so he did. His lesson plans could wait.
