So then, this happened.

Beatrice's injury at the Desiree seminar did not respond to a month of crate rest. In fact, her pain and limp worsened.  Turns out, she had ruptured a ligament in her 'knee'.  She had tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery by Dr. Flynn at Cascade Veterinary Referral Center. Surgery went well and she has now been on 2 months of crate rest ( Read more... )

Ooooooohhhh!!!!! I love that split faced girl! Another cousin in the area!

I'm sure it seems much longer to you, but I can't believe it has been 2 months already since Bea's surgery. Fingers crossed she gets to start her rehab soon.

You are going to have a busy but fun summer!

I need to talk to you about herding. Are you gonna be down this way? I'm glad you like her. I think she is something special.

I will be in Eugene for a sheepdog trial on 26 June, and was hoping to visit Portland area friends on my way home on the 27th. I could stop by?

Ah, sadly, I have a wedding and wedding guests that weekend. I'm sure there will be another time. For now, what is the mistake I don't want to make with my puppy and my sheep?

For now, don't let her in with them and don't let her sit and stare at them through the fence, or chase them along the fence. Most dogs aren't ready for real training until they are a year old, although some are ready earlier. And if your sheep aren't really dog broke then you won't want to use them for training her at first. When she is 6 months old or so, that would be a good time to find some good puppy sheep for her to experience and see if her instinct has "turned on" yet. I took Davy to the farm with me from the time I brought him home. I would walk him along the fence so he could see the sheep and start to get used to them when he was a little puppy. He really didn't show much interest in them, but I made sure he could slip through the fence either and get himself in trouble. Start working on her lie down and her recall, those are helpful things to have when you start training her.

My next trial in Oregon is 18-20 July. I could stop by on my way down on the 18th?

Congratulations on getting a sheep dog to go with your sheep. Much good news in the post -- I hope that Bea's rehab goes smoothly and quickly so she can romp with her new little sister when she gets to Oregon.
