PSA: Please be nice to your kids ... this includes choosing a nice name for them

Jun 12, 2006 15:54

Whenever a kid comes to sign up for a computer, I usually try to peek at the name as the kid is writing it so I can tell whether or not I'll be able to read and/or pronounce the name (and, if I'm quick and on top of things, ask the kid how to pronounce their name if I'm unsure).

So today I was watching a boy write out his name: J-E-W-E-L-S.

^_^ *glomps back* I've been working crazy hours at work (and I haven't even started the new job yet!) and trying to decide if I'm catching cold or just still being plagued by allergies (I think it's decided on the latter). And reading... ^^;

That's up there with Rose, which I just saw for a kid. He'll either get tortured or go into gender studies.

I seriously wonder how some people can justify the awful names they choose for their kids. Don't they think about the consequences their poor kid is going to have to pay? It makes me sad thinking about those kids.

I think it has more to do with short-sightedness. The name sounds cute to the ear, and it's easy to picture someone with a cutesy name up to their 20s, but after that ... well, it's gonna be hard to be taken seriously as a CEO of whatever with a name like Peaches ...

Aw man... How could you do that to a kid???

May he grow up semi-normal despite his potentially life-scarring name. :moment of silence:

Amen. ;_; *observes moment of silence*

He seemed like a normal boy. He was playing Runescape with the rest of them. >_< But still... The thoughtlessness of some parents is astounding. *shakes head*

I intend to be VERY thoughtful about the naming of my own potential child(ren).
