Once upon a time...

I just read a story to a little girl. =)

First she asked me for some Angelina Ballerina books, but she'd already read all of them. So then she asked for mermaid books, and I found a copy of Andersen's The Little Mermaid. But she was a Disney girl ("I like Ariel!") so I wasn't sure if she'd be okay with the decidedly un-Disney ending of the real ( Read more... )

That's so cute! I can see you sitting down to read to little girls. I'm glad she liked the original story (although it made me cry when I was little . . . I'm a happy ending fan, although I can appreciate good poignancy).

Of course I'm a happy ending fan too, but it is a beautiful story. And it's good to not expect happy endings all the time. There's some really pretty Russian fairy tales with sad endings too. A lot of Andersen's tales have sad endings, but I don't like his other sad ones as much as the Little Mermaid.

I'm not entirely sure she understood the sadness of the ending though, particularly since she was asking lots of questions towards the end and not so much paying attention to the story. :P But it was fun. ^_^ I was going to read another happier, funnier story to her (Little Red: A Fizzingly Good Yarn, which is an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood) but her dad finally came back and claimed her.

I haven't actually 'read' a lot of fairy tales--I just kind of pick them up from pop culture. I'm going to need to start, thanks to some brilliant inspiration I got for my novels, but those will be more Asian (I needed a NEW set of supernatural creatures for my urban fantasy, since EVERYONE has the same old ones...and Ana reminded me to keep writing what I know, so I went, "Duh, Japan!" Although, I've read enough urban fantasies in my day that I could write a convincing, but trite, story using the usual line up. I think I'll keep vampires, though, because I [heart] vampires).

Ah, well I'm a fairy tales geek, so I know all kinds of them, and different versions of the same ones from other cultures and stuff. And I have two cool books of Japanese fairy tales that I've had since I was a kid (they actually were my mom's when she was a kid too). ^_^ But if you're writing about fairy tales, I definitely want to be kept posted! Well, I'd be interested in whatever you're writing, but I'm in love with fairy tales so that's of particular interest. ^_~

Gosh, I really need to get back to my stories. I've only been writing poetry lately. I miss my stories. But I'm kind of stuck on them, so I've been neglecting having to actually think about them and such. I think I've had enough time off from them though. And I just got a new idea the other day. *sigh* So many stories...
