I just got home from work a while ago and signed in to iGoogle, where I was greeted by the headlines of Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. I proceeded to sit here for a minute, in utter confusion, because he hasn't done anything. I then read the headline to my friend Brittany (who is visiting for the weekend), and she was equally confused ( Read more... )

We really do have a skewed sense of priorities, don't we? *sigh* It seems intentions are good enough... Obama's got big enough shoes to fill as it is between his promises and the world's expectations. I agree, there are people who sacrifice every day for the causes of peace - people who live in that pursuit who, IMHO, deserve the prize and the recognition so much more.

I especially hate that the nominations were due two weeks after the inauguration. I mean, WHAT? Couldn't they have at least waited until next year, when he might possibly have done something? Though I think I would still tend to think there are more deserving people for the prize.

I'm totally with you, but I don't think we can blame the *Americans* this time. Mostly I've just spent the day being perplexed. But the Peace prize is notoriously weird. How do you give a prize for "peace," really?

Oh, I know it's not our fault. But it's another thing I'm not proud of, as an American, and many world reactions seem unimpressed and/or perplexed. *sigh*

Those are the people we should be honouring.

Yes, this.

So much in agreement with you on this (which I just heard about five minutes ago). Some people do so much, SO MUCH, dedicate their whole lives to the cause of peace. I hate that one of them didn't get honored because a very famous public figure with good rhetoric and good intentions did instead.

And then the next day he's still just talking about all these good things and not setting any timelines or anything constructive. Argh. There are SO MANY more deserving people.

The killer for me is how the nominations were due two weeks after his inauguration, when he really hadn't done anything. I mean, just... WHAT? *headdesk*

What really, really gets me is that the man talks a big game, but HASN'T DONE ANYTHING -- even now.

It's like he got nominated just because he's the first black president and has made a lot of vague promises.

:pulls out hair: It drives me NUTS! ...And of course to voice any of these feelings as a white woman makes me racist -- this is the main reason why I don't talk politics at work.

GAH! :headdesk:

Yes, exactly! I hadn't been thinking about it much either way, but this incident made me really aggravated that he's still talking empty words with no timelines for doing anything. Argh.

I am actually so annoyed that I think I need to make a meme out of this. Like, try to get a bunch of people to post about someone who actually works for peace. I'm going to try to do that this weekend.
