To boldly go

Today at the NASM, there was a Meet the Astronauts! event. So I got to see three astronauts and hear them talk about space geeky stuff amid the artifacts in the Space Race gallery. It was awesome. :D

You're living the dream, babe.

That sounds like a lot of fun. It's great you have such an awesome internship.

I ♥ Original Trek! First interracial kiss on screen too, wasn't it? We like it for Important Social Reasons. *firm nod*

For all it's a sexist mess, the original Battlestar Galactica had black characters in positions of power, which the new show notably doesn't. Interesting, eh?

Yep, first interracial kiss on TV. (It was an "aliens made them do it" kiss, but still very ahead of its time nonetheless.)

And, yes, definitely we like it for Important Social Reasons. The geekyness is just a side benefit, honest. (Never mind the fact that I was watching reruns with glee long before I had any idea of its social impact.) ;)

Hmm, yeah, that is interesting about the different Battlestar series. Modern shows aren't as racially/genderly diverse as they were before that became a Huge Deal. (For instance, the Stargate franchise fails at diversity, however much I love it.)

One of the four main characters of SG-1 is black; I would consider that good. Guess it's just SG:A that's behind the times :P

Some shows do a great job at diversity - look at Heroes. It does seem that some have slipped now the pressure's not so high, though.

Oh, I know about Teal'c, and there's non-white people on SGA's main team, but they're aliens, which doesn't quite make it as diversity in my book since they're still being portrayed as Other. What's important to me is not just having a diverse cast, but also how those diversities are played out in the characters.

I don't watch Heroes, but I do appreciate its diversity! It's one of those shows I was vaguely intrigued by, but never got around to watching. Maybe someday.
