full of whispers, full of sighs

Today my parents and I went down to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's estate. It was rainy today; it rained the last time we went to Mt. Vernon years ago. Apparently we have started a tradition of going to Mt. Vernon in the rain. It is good to have traditions ( Read more... )

Ohhh, I like that poem. It's like, ah, okay, a poem about spring--OMG SADNESS! I like surprise endings in poetry as well as movies and books *l*

I know! Surprise endings are always, well, a surprise. :P And they're so hard to accomplish in poetry!

It's such a good portrayal of spring, and an equally accurate portrayal of the sadness of missing someone who's not around anymore.

Shucks, I've been meaning to visit Carlyle House, I wish I'd known they were having an event like that. They're having a garden fair next weekend; that's almost as good as costumes.

Sounds like you're showing your folks a good time!

It was quite lucky that we got to see all the costumes and such. We had been going to do some outdoorsy stuff, but then it was raining so we switched things around. And it worked out quite well!

*stares some more* :D

I'm sorry, I appear to be stalking you all out of order today. :-) Carlyle House sounds fab (George Washington discussing interior decorating? &hearts!), and yay for more Millay! She's so good at evoking a contrast between the the outward exuberance of Spring and the speaker's quiet inward pain. Another one of hers that's good for similar themes of the seasons and loss is What Lips My Lips Have Kissed.

(Heh, and sorry if I'm coming across too much like a skeevy drug dealer. "Here, try another hit of ESVM. What, no, I'm no addict, it's not habit-forming at all!")

Oh, you are so much more amusing than the pseudo-stalker I had a couple years back, so I don't really care what order you stalk me in. ;)

George Washington going on about the awful green wallpaper was very amusing, particularly as we had just seen the two rooms painted in that same shade at his home in Mt. Vernon. I was quite impressed by the guy playing George and the guy playing Carlyle (the man of the house) because we were stuck in the room with them for much longer than we should have been due to the people in the next room lingering on forever. So poor George and Carlyle had to keep making small talk, and I thought they managed quite well.

(I avoid skeevy drug dealers like the plague, but I am all for welcoming skeevy poetry dealers with open arms!)
