The mountain path (with sheer drop) would have been very daunting, given that a 100-pound pack would alter a person's centre of gravity. (If I'm interpreting this right, about the thousand pounds needing ten round trips. No useful little donkeys to carry things?)
The train-ride sounds breathtaking. The train listing to the left - I'm guessing this was over to the airy spectacular view side, not the good solid rock side - mortal terror grips! Was the decrepit bridge formerly part of the line?
