I've had five hamsters total over the years, all at separate times. They're relatively easy to care for: daily food and water checks/changes, weekly cage cleanings, and complete cage breakdowns and scrubbings every month or 6 weeks

thejennabides keeps hamsters - she keeps hers in separate cages. There was an ugly incident between Quatre-hamu and Heero-hamu. >.>;; That's about all I know of hamsters. ^^;; *is no help*
When it comes to furry little rodents, I've had good experience with gerbils. They're cute, friendly, don't bite (unless you make a habit of feeding them corn through the cage bars and then sticking in your fingers) curious and playful, and very social, so you need at least two to keep each other company. They're desert animals, so they don't smell much, or make much noise other than scuffling around the cage.
