The only reason that Jess hadn’t forgotten that Dean was supposed to come check on her was that after their conversation, a part of her was worried that he wouldn’t show up at all. It wasn’t just because she was scared of losing the first friendly and familiar face that had she’d seen after her mysterious comeback, no; it was also because she worried about everything she had a reason to worry about, and Dean, she had a reason to worry about.

Dean had said a week, and after a week, earlier than she expected, there was a knock on the door, and when she opened it, she saw Dean, standing in the rain and looking like hell. And she told him so.

“You don’t look so good,” she said, pulling him into the room and giving him a hug. “Everything okay?”

Yeah, well. Dealing with demons, even after more-than-marginal experience with them, didn't necessarily leave one in good shape. There might be a split lip. And a bit of ginger movement favoring one leg he'd taken a fall on it - it wasn't twisted, but that was kind of luck alone. At least he'd mostly dried off from his outdoors time?

... and then Jess hugged him and he just blinked in surprise, first one arm and then the other going around to hug her back. "He-ey, Jess. Yeah, things're okay. Or as okay as they can get, I guess."

She couldn't remember that, probably. The time when he'd hugged her so tight that she had to remind him that she couldn't breathe. The time when she was laughing, glowing, with Sam's ring on her finger. Not here. Not now. Not real.

She was somehow real, though. The girl he saw wearing that smurfs shirt and then burning on the ceiling above his brother as he was dragging Sam out. "Yeah. How... are things okay for you?"

"Things are fine for me." And they were fine, considering she was back from the dead and all. She felt like she was doing a fairly good job of adjusting. She let Dean go, and pointed to the couch. “Sit.”

“Do you want some coffee?” She asked, going to the bathroom and getting him a towel. “Or some food? Or, um….anything?” She handed him the towel, and went to the motel’s version of a kitchen to turn on the coffee machine-even if he said no to the coffee, she felt like it would be a good idea to have some around.

He said he was okay, but she, for some reason, had her doubts. “There’s ice and some painkillers, too, if you need it.”

"Coffee. Yeah." He did sit down for a moment, then frowned at the suggestion of painkillers, and rose again to find his way to the bathroom to look at the damage. Oh, sweet.

He called out, "thanks, Jess," and rinsed the lip, splashed some water on his face, then returned to use the towel she'd handed him. Took off his jacket. "It's... kinda been a while since I've not been the one doing these..." Coffee. Breakfast. Because after Castiel had yanked him off those sandwiches, he didn't trust food or drink angels provided. If he could help it. "If you're having breakfast or something." He'd join up for that.

He looked around, taking his jacket off, settling more civilizedly, somewhat. "Do you... um. Didn't ask before. This place paid up and whatever? How do you... what've you been managing to do? It's probably not exactly easy showing up all alone and everything."

It was as good a topic of conversation as any, right?
