Writer's Block: Close Call

May 21, 2009 18:40

I can't believe i was just asked this. I don't even know if I have the time and energy. So, the short version.

I was driving to Texas from California with y family when I was 18. It was early morning and we were just entering New Mexico. My dad had driven all night and it was my turn. We were in the left of two lanes, going about 86 mph. In front of ( Read more... )

That was some fast thinking you did there. I don't know too many people who would have had the foresight OR the courage to speed up and drive straight through.

You got one heckuva guardian angel there.

There was really very little thinking. I quickly decided that it was okay to die. We were on our way to my grandpa's funeral, after all. I was just fine with it, and I thought that maybe some of the family would be better off than me, not being in the front. It was such a surprise to be alive, like hat moment when you wake up and realize you were just in a dream.

No wits. Resignation.

We were out in the middle of nowhere. Kind of outside of Gallup, but not really. We kept expecting a helicopter to come, but it was just an ambulance. I don't know how they expected to actually drive someone to a hospital after that. I guess they just didn't know. I often wonder if I could find a newspaper article and see if anyone lived. I just can't imagine it.

How horrifying... and... sad for those other people. It must have taken you guys a long time to get over that, if you have at all. -shudder-

I kept telling the driver of the car that was going the wrong way (the young Indians)not to look at his friend. I kept telling him he would be fine, just to chill out and sit there. I knew I was lying. And I felt bad about it.

I couldn't drive the rest of the day. I never go a day without thinking of it.

a friend of mine was driving down las vegas blvd about ten years ago. so we were about 19-20. All of a sudden this motor cycle comes out of no where, hits his truck head on, flips over the bike and goes through his windshield and and is half out the back of his back window in his cab. She died right there next to him. It tore her head off to.

It took him YEARS to drive again. I probably would have had a heart attack had that happened to me (or what happened to you)
