I have a lot of friends who, for a variety of reasons, are not parents, and I've often thought about the ridiculousness of the prejudices they face. But a sentence in a Slate piece by the always loathesome but occasionally thought-provoking Katie Roiphe made me think a little harder about my own attitudes toward them. And I don't think I could get through a live performance of "First of May" without some serious blushing going on. :-)

My plan is to sing along, loudly, so no one notices my red face. We'll see how it works -- we have tickets for his June 20 performance in SF.

it does (still) surprise me how many times parents assume I don't like kids.

Yes, I always think that's a strange assumption. I have one non-parent friend who claims not to like kids, but in reality I think he's just not that comfortable around them -- he's always been perfectly friendly to my children. All the rest have at a minimum been the "cool" aunt or uncle to their beloved nieces and nephews, and many really love spending time with kids.
