I was just thinking of reccing really good anime that could be considered in the sci-fi/fantasy genre itself.
Because I think people conflate anime as a medium with anime as a genre. And pointing out that there are good sci-fi fantasy anime might help get over that impression.
Hmm, so really classic definitions of Scifi and Fantasy? That's pretty easy then. Although I'm going to completely date myself in the process.
Ghost in the Shell (could not be more cyberpunk if it tried) Record of Lodoss War (It doesn't get more Lord-of-the-Rings-y) Planetes (Science!) Vision of Escaflowne (More fantasy worlds) Every Miyazaki movie ever made, but especially Howl's Moving Castle. Tiger & Bunny deserves a mention for being straight up Super Hero stuff. Seirei no Moribito is a really richly constructed fantasy world.
That's what I got off the top of my head at least. Hope it helps!
