I was looking for ass-kicking WOC in YA as well... I got a few suggestions in comments, but haven't read through them all, so not sure how they are. But such a large YES from me about the need for more POC in YA, particularly girls. I loved Le Guin's Voices for not only having a POC heroine, but also for having an entire book filled with POC, and for addressing colonization and occupation in a thoughtful, honest manner, and ditto with Stormwitch and Zahrah the Windseeker, but I want more!!
