Hello and welcome to the very first, PEOPLE OF COLOR IN SCIFI & FANTASY BLOG CARNIVAL.

First off, this carnival was not put out on CPT. I was in the midst of moving house and unfortunately assumed I've be settled in and have time to stop unpacking and collate. That was not the case. My move wasn't completed until the 27th of June, fully 12days ( Read more... )

This is awesome, thank you so much for doing this and for starting the carnival.

I was looking for ass-kicking WOC in YA as well... I got a few suggestions in comments, but haven't read through them all, so not sure how they are. But such a large YES from me about the need for more POC in YA, particularly girls. I loved Le Guin's Voices for not only having a POC heroine, but also for having an entire book filled with POC, and for addressing colonization and occupation in a thoughtful, honest manner, and ditto with Stormwitch and Zahrah the Windseeker, but I want more!!

I just perused your conversation and will go back to go over it more in depth when I'm less sleepy. Busy day today for me :)

I moved recently and wanted comfort books to read while waiting for dsl and the tv etc etc. And I looked and I looked and I looked. And there really wasn't anything. The librarians didn't know of anything, or what they did know of I'd read already and while ok, it wasn't my thing.

I wanted books about teenagers dealing with vampires and pig-tailed lil' girls discovering faeries and it just wasn't there. No brown skin boys with shiny black hair finding swords. No round faced girls with dark eyes picking pockets in a land of dragons and qilin. Nothing.

And I found myself going wtf, you mean since Ursala LeGuin did EarthSea it's all hunt and peck?!

By the way, try Baby Of The Family by Tina McElroy Ansa. It's about a young black girl in the south and her ability to see spirits. There's a sequel for when she's all grown up. But in all good honesty I didn't enjoy it. It read too much like white chick flick/sex in ( ... )

I'm probably too caucasian for it to be appropriate for me to host, but I will definitely keep my eyes open for interesting material.

Thank you.
