Sam had actually considered the speed dating thing, for all of about thirty seconds before he decided that he just didn't care enough to put forth the effort it would almost certainly require. Yes, it would have been nice to meet some attractive girls, but he had plenty of friends fitting the same criteria, and anyway, dating had never much been ( Read more... )

This was not something that she had signed up for. Erica had seen the announcement asking for sign ups and had even gone so far to briefly consider signing up. It would have been a good way to meet people, if nothing else. In the end she had decided to give this time a pass. It wasn't the fault of anyone really, it was just that the timing felt a little off.

Her appearance at the Hub tonight was an accident. It had slipped her mind that it was going to be occupied and so she'd decided to just check it out for something to do. The sight of speed dating in full swing had made her reconsider this. She was in the middle of deciding if she should stay or go when she heard a familiar voice. Turning to look at him, a blush crept up her cheeks as if she had been caught doing something she shouldn't. "Oh God, no. I considered it, but decided to hold onto my temporary insanity card for a little while longer," she laughed as she surveyed the scene. "Why? Did you?"

It initially occurred to Erica to refute this. To point out that everyone had some sort of experience with things like that. She even went so far as to open her mouth, only to close it a moment later when she remembered what he had told her. There were a lot of things that Sam had experience with that nobody ever should. Why shouldn't he also have a list of experiences that he missed out on?

"Yeah, I'm pretty certain it is too. It's a shame about the soccer team thing. Not that you had to play to soccer, but there are a large variety of kid activities where you get a trophy just for showing up. A prize for playing the game," she pointed out with a laugh and a shrug.

"Yeah, I... wasn't really big on the whole team sports thing," Sam said, pulling a face. That was putting it mildly, even - in fact, he was pretty sure he could remember a few teachers having given him the oh so clichéd 'doesn't play well with others' comment, though it wasn't strictly true - but was the best way he could think of to describe it. Chances were he wouldn't need to give any more detail than that. "Liked it better working on my own."

"Why does that not surprise me?" There was no malice in her comment. It really wasn't surprising given what she knew about him. Sam definitely had the lone wolf act down to a science, but it didn't grate on her quite the same way that it had for others. At least Sam had a reason to try it on his own and that reason was a lot better than looking down his nose at everyone. "It's not bad; it just makes sense."

Sam could have answered that question, of course, but it was a subject he preferred not to breach. After the conversation they'd had while children, the things he'd wound up telling her about, of course it didn't surprise her. She knew more about him than anyone here, save perhaps Quorra. That she'd have guessed as much only made sense in itself. It might have even been a good thing, considering how often people had tried to make him do otherwise while he'd been growing up.

"Well, I'm glad you don't think it's bad," he said wryly, glancing at her as they walked. "It'd kind of suck for me if you did." It wasn't as if he intended to change his ways any time in the near future, not even if Erica had wanted him to after all.

Part of her regretted having gone there at all. There was always the chance that saying something might take a turn for the awkward and Erica didn't want that. She simply wanted to let Sam know that if he ever needed someone to just be present she could do that. She'd leave the sentimentality at the door and everything. It could just be cool.

"Yeah, it kind of would," she agreed with a laugh and a dismissive shrug. "And we can't have that, can we? If I'm going to let you suffer, it's going to be for something really good."

"Glad to hear it," Sam said, shaking his head as he laughed. For his own part, when things were this good, he was going to take any option afforded him to keep the subject away from anything serious, but that didn't mean that, deep down, he didn't appreciate it. Erica might not have known the half of it - no one did - but she still knew more than anyone else and hadn't gone anywhere yet, and that meant a hell of a lot. He was just bad at saying so, or even admitting it to himself. "I'll take that as... some sort of compliment."

"It is." Erica had to think about it, trying to decide exactly what her motivation had been. She was someone who chose her words with a great deal of care and consideration. The wrong word choice could change the essence of what was being said. There was no reason to be lazy, even if she did have the habit of speaking quickly.

"In a very strange way. There's no fun in having the element of surprise for those things. I prefer for people I'm upset at to know why. Be glad we haven't gone there."
