There are some things that just don't have to be said. Geoffrey can look at Duck sometimes, when he's working or just sitting there or looking back, and he just knows what's going on inside his head.
"It's pretty all right, isn't it?" he says. "I don't know where this life came from but I'm pretty damn glad it's mine."
"Better than she would be without us," says Geoffrey, squeezing his hand back. "You're the one who's great with her. I don't even know what to do with small children most of the time, other than feed them and read to them."
Duck's smile widens into a grin, and he laughs, pushing the heel of his free hand against one eye. "That how come she squeals whenever you come home?" he asks. "'Cause you read to her?"
