Duck watches him from the edges of the crowd. He'd almost tried keeping Geoffrey home this morning, but he's kept him home every morning since they woke to find Sunny's bed empty, and Duck can't keep him there any longer, even if he feels about ready to crawl out his skin being this far away from him ( Read more... )

"If by that you mean I managed to stay on the stage and let words come out of my mouth, then yeah, I got through it," says Geoffrey, clutching his hand tightly. This stage is his second home, but all he can see right now is Sunny prancing across it in her fairy wings. "I don't care about this election. Let's go somewhere else. Anywhere else."

Duck's nod is immediate, his feet finding a path without noting or much caring where it leads. There are so few places to go now. The stage holds too many memories, the Compound is too close to the school, too full of places Sunny used to sit and color, the sight of the school makes him want to scream.

He walks and doesn't stop and barely slows when he feels a tug from Geoffrey's hand, but he tries. "Should meet with the Crew," he murmurs, with about as much interest in doing so as Geoffrey has for the elections.

"They're fine," says Geoffrey. "They're not--" He doesn't go so far as to say they're not important, because anything Duck values is important, but he just doesn't care. Not right now. He just wants to get out of earshot of people, and away from reminders of a part of his life that was ripped from him without any warning. He's lost things before, important things, but never quite like this.

Maybe they'll just keep wandering till they hit dinosaurs. Geoffrey just holds on tight.

"You can deal with them later," he says finally, because he's still in a place where everything can just happen later.

"Yeah," says Duck, like Geoffrey's approval is all he needs and hell, it probably is. "You hungry?" he asks, always afraid to let the silence drag on too long. Things between he and Geoffrey have always been easy, but they've learned to leave a space between them for Sunny, a place for her to get a word in edgewise, and all at once that space is empty. Duck feels like it's swallowing him up.

"Could find something."
